Can you litter train rabbits like cats, Like keep the bun's out of the cages, will they use the litter box like cats will..

Like when I had my ferret, I would let him out but ferrets have a short brain lost and they couldn't remeber the litter box was. Is a rabbit a same way? I seen a lot of photo's of bun's left out of their cages. So,I was wondering if it is true or not. Thanks

My bun is litter trained and hasn't peed outside of his litter box since I got him at 8 weeks (except he always pees in his carrier ... I think it's because he's scared). Anyway, he'll come out of his cage at 10am after he finishes his breakfast and not go back until 11pm. He could easily run back and use his litter box, but he chooses not to and doesn't have any issues holding it all day. So it's possible! He doesn't even poo while he's out of his cage.

If he did have accidents, I would bring his litter box out to the living room where he hangs out so he wouldn't have so far to go to find it (I've tried this, and he doesn't feel the need to use it so I don't bother).

Plenty of bus are given free range and manage to go back to their litter boxes. However, most of the successful ones are spayed and neutered- I believe your buns are for show and breeding? If so, and you don't choose to speuter them, they may not ever be reliable enough with their litter habits to let them out for long periods of time.

Yes, They are used for Showing and breeding, Just I want to let them out of their cages at any time, But Thanks for the info.

Just because a rabbit is intact, doesn't preclude their ability to litter train. I know of two unneutered bucks that are litter trained and are very good about not peeing or pooping outside their cages.

I don't know if having intact girls around would affect that, but these two are only-bunnies (no other bunnies in the house) and I'd consider them as litter trained as any cat.

Does can be better about their litter habits, but I don't actually know anyone with intact girls that are litter trained. Not to say it can't be done.

I'd at least TRY giving litter training a go. If it works, yay! If not, at least you gave it a shot!

Hope that helps!

i have litter boxes in both cages.. The male is doing great and i see more poo in hes litter box then the doe's..

My un-altered female lionhead who is about 7-10 months is pretty much potty trained...she was even pooping completley in the box but some reason that stopped.

My young 3 month old lionhead pees everywhere and it makes me pretty angry..she just wont take to a box.

But right now they don't have access to their boxes in thier cages when they are out..and they just hold their pee for the most part (But poop everywhere)

*edit. i also have corner litter boxes, but i am switching to regular cat boxes to see if that makes a difference with Simba my young lionhead.

yes you can litter train rabbits. my only rabbit is male and is around 5months- he has never pee-ed anywhere other than his litterbox since i got him. :) sometimes i see a few stray poos but that's not that big of a deal since you can just pick them up and put them in the litterbox.

Yeah, It's not like dog and ferret poo that is hard to pick up.. I like about the rabbits about the poo and the smell.

Haha! Yeah, that's what I kept saying to hubby when he'd complain about Gus leaving a few stray poops on the floor, "But honey, wouldn't you rather pick up bunny poop than dog poop?" I never could get a reply to that, though. :p

that's a good one. i'm going to say that to my mum the next time she complains about the stray poops! :biggrin2:

lol... too funny.. i say the same thing to my hubby, he wants the bun's outdoors and i tell him that they smell hell ya good then the ferret did.
