According to House Rabbit Society and other agencies, it's 8-10 years. It can definitely vary though, I've had two live to be 6 and almost 8. I've also heard of buns living upwards of 14 years!:)

Really OMG i always thought it was 8-12 oh well itrs obviously something around that area!

Yep really :(. Outdoor rabbits here are generally not neutered or spayed, fed on alfalfa (lucerne) pellets all their lives and free fed as people don't know any better, often not fed hay, often not vaccinated or ever taken to a vet. Most people seem to feed large carrots and apples daily and the suger messes with them.

That is slowly changing though so hopefull the average lifespan will get higher and higher :D.

I have a friend that has a 16 year old rabbit. She has recently submitted paperwork to Guiness Book of World Records to have him named oldest living rabbit.

I have an 8.5 year old foster bun right now. He's still kickin' :biggrin2:.

In theory, a well cared for rabbit should live to 10 or above, however as they are such sensitive animals many die long before their time.:(Luckily as the world is becoming more knowledgeable about rabbitsit meansless and less rabbits are dying of things to do with care (VHDfor example) however there are still many diseases and illness out there that our poor bunnies are so vulnerable to.:(

For instance, I gave my Ruby and Millie (sisters)the exact same care their entire lives. Vaccinations, spaying, a healthy diet, exercise, companionship, mental stimulation - and yet my poor Ruby passed away nearly a year now while my Millie has just turned 7 and is looking and acting as healthy as ever. We just never know with rabbits...it's the one thing I would change about them if I could. Just to make them a bit more hardy!:?
