I've heard that lettuce is good for rabbits, and I've also heard that it is bad and will cause diarrhea. Is it the iceberg lettuce that is bad, and green leaf lettuce is good? (Fed in moderation, of course) I've heard that the iceberg lettuce is too full of water and not enough nutrients or something like that.

Thanks!

--how true,-yes-iceberg -lettuce-has little to offer very low in fiber but lots of water-as far as I know-it is not dangerous,--leaf lettuces are better, but only as a treat--lots of grasses,-herbivores need to chew a lot and the ie.timothy, orchard are full of fiber which not only keep the teeth growing-under control but the gi tract healthy as well,--diarrhea is generally mild and clears up if the offending item is removed or fed a smaller portion-- http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/poop.html try this link for a lot of info,--sincerely james waller :dancingorig::bunny19

Is it the iceberg lettuce that is bad, and green leaf lettuce is good? ... iceburg lettuce is too full of water and not enough nutrients or something like that.

That's it, basically. Iceburg lettuce isn't actively harmful, it's just basically water without much nutrition. Other lettuces are good, not just green and red leaf but also romaine and the other varieties. I give Natasha organic spring mix for her breakfast, which is a mixture of many kinds of young lettuce leaves. She loves to pick out each kind and eat them in turn, which satisfies her desire to selectively graze.

Iceberg lettuce is no good, even in small amounts it gives my bunnies digestive upsets. Never tried romaine or red lettuce so not too sure on that but a substitute can be fresh parsley, spinach (although mine don't care for it too much), radish tops, carrot tops, cucumber leaves, kale (mine love this!), turnip greens, and dandelion leaves (also a favorite!)
