I ordered Orchard Grass hay from Bunny Bytes in Seattle, WA, and my bunnies just aren't as into it as their First Cut Timothy Hay. Bunny Bytes is getting a little on the expensive side, and I just looked at KleenMama's Hayloft, and their 45 lb box of 2nd cut timothy hay comes out cheaper. I'm wondering if I should buy a small box and see if my buns like it before committing to a larger box.

Any experiences with KMS 2nd cut timothy hay? I know bunnies are picky and it really depends on the bun, but mine seem to like the coarser first cut timothy hay, so I don't know if they'll go for the second cutting.

I haven't ordered from KMS yet, but plan to [just got my rabbit Saturday!]. When I had a question, I got a prompt reply from Karen, & shipping charges for you in the northwest should be a lot less than to me in Chicago. As I recall, you could also get some "free" samples for a $5 shipping/handling fee.

Oh! I wish I'd known about the samples! Darn it! I went ahead and ordered some second cutting timothy hay for the bunnies. It's cheaper for a 45 lb box even with shipping, than a 30 or 35 lb box of the first cut stuff they like from Bunny Bytes. if they don't like it, I'll donate it to a rabbit welfare group or the local humane shelter where I got Simon. Weirdly, I just couldn't justify buying even a small amount of hay with the shipping costs being more than the actual hay. I know it's not cost effective if they don't eat it, but... my mind works in weird ways. :p

Congratulations on your new rabbit!:thumbup

I agree that the high shipping costs seem worse than a raised price & a lowered shipping cost, somehow. I mentioned that to Karen, but ... Anyway, if they don't like it, it will go to good use. And you could find out from Karen what happens to the 1st cut hay the farmer she buys from grows.
Thanks for the congrats. I'm waiting until her new name is finalized before posting about her.

Yeah, maybe it's just a psychological thing... but it seemed a little steep to be paying shipping that is over twice what the hay cost, for a small amount of hay. It doesn't sound like she orders (if that's what you call it) first cut hay at all from her suppliers--none is for sale per the website, at any rate. Something about it being too coarse and potentially sharp and dangerous for guinea pigs and chinchillas.

My rabbits seem to be odd--they actually seem to prefer coarse hay over softer hay, so I'm a little worried they'll snub the second cutting stuff. I'm more than happy to give it to a rescue or the animal shelter--but the thought of loading a 45lb box of the stuff into my car kinda is the stuff of my nightmares.:p

I can't wait to hear about your new rabbit. And you'll post pictures, right? :wink
