Kirby has always had pretty good litter box habits. He'd mark up places again if I vacuumed or wiped a surface clean in his pen sometimes but nothing big. When I got Toby in the room with him he did a bit more marking but it wasn't a lot. The last few weeks it was like he got confused or something! Every time I clean the litter box and give him a new batch of litter and hay inside, he sits and eats the hay from outside his box and eats it there, instead of sitting IN the box to eat hay. I've shooed him into the box a few times but overnight he would just poop a big load of poops on the floor right next to his litter box. I clean it up, and he will happily use the box the rest of the time until I clean the box out again.
This morning I found a LOT of poop. I mean it was maybe 3-4 fistfuls of poops on the floor next to the litter box.
I don't catch him in the act ever, just see the aftermath. So I don't feel that scolding him will be beneficial as he won't know what I'm mad about.
What should I do?? I have always put hay (lots of it) in his box and he used to be fine until just recently, eating and pooping from inside the box. What could be causing him to poop outside a clean box?
