i saw that(the fires)on the news last night. and there was a blip on the national(chan.9)news about the fires, too. poor little babies! hopefully they can go back soon. where did they take them, BTW?

edited to add:never mind, i found it in the article. the fair grounds are only like 20 minutes from us:dude::p!

Wow, is all I can say. I will be saying a prayer for those animals and the surrounding communities!

Good luck to everyone involved in the rescue.

Reading this article made me think that Midwest RR&R needs to put a disaster preparedness plan into place. I've got to get my thinking cap on!!!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. They should be moving the animals back tomorrow. They did move them all pretty smoothly. The shelter serves about six surrounding municipalities and they all sent their animal control trucks to move the animals.

The fires are under control here, but are still quite bad down south. The last I heard their were 162 homes burned to the ground. My heart just breaks for all those people who have lost everything. Many people had no chance whatsoever to get anything from their homes.

It must be hard!

i know it was hard when hurricane katrina came by and out local shelter had to evacuate all of their animals. it is so sad how mother nature can be so cural! i wish i could do something but 1. i am in louisiana and 2. a 14 year-old cant really do anything in this country!

Will definately keep the critters at your shelter and you guys in our thoughts & prayers - we have been watching this on the news. I'm so sorry.

And Gumbo - there are lots of things a 14 year old can do- I bet you do a lot of things, although I know sometimes things feel like they are holding you back.

They moved them about 15 miles away to the Volusia County Fairgrounds, which is a designated emergency animal shelter. I just this very minute heard on the news that the animals are being moved back this morning. I will be going by the shelter after work to help out.

Many of the people who had their house burned down were at work or out shopping and were not allowed to return to their homes before they burned to retrieve anything. I'm hoping that there were no pets lost.

I'm glad they can go back. I'm so sorry for the loss of homes and such. I wish I could send some of this rain to you.... it's pouring here.

On my way to work on I-4 I saw a huge convoy of animal control trucks going the other way bringing the animals back to the shelter. I don't know why, but seeing this made me all teary-eyed. I hoping that the media attention the shelter got during the evacuation will have a positive effect on adoptions.

Your not the only one, I was teary eyed when I read your post and article about this....I think I am getting waaay too emotional the older I get.

A very sad update to this thread. I found out yesterday that something happened during the evacuation that resulted in a rabbit being euthanized. The other rabbit volunteer and I are trying to find out what happened - no answers yet.

I spent last night bawling my eyes out over this. Wiz was a big, brown lop bunny with a great personality. I have never seen a bunny that loved to play with toys as much as her. I just keep picturing her sweet face and start crying all over again.
