We gave our new baby bunny his first veggie yesterday--some tiny, matchstick-sized pieces of carrot--and the poor little guy has diarrhea this morning. We'd read that veggies should be introduced slowly and in small quantities, one variety at a time. Is he still too young to eat veggies? Also, should we be concerned about the loose stools at this point or should we just put him back on his pellet and hay diet and make sure he gets lots of water? Or should we be panicking and seeing a vet? He's still very active and hasn't shown any behavioral changes so far.

He's such a little sweetie, I'd hate for him to get sick--we've read that diarrhea can be fatal. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give us.

Because of his reaction he is too young to be eating veggies you should put him back on unlimited hay and a cup of pellets diet and if the loose stools continue after about a day or two of this diet then bring him too the vet.

I agree with LakeCondo. Make sure he drinks and doesn't get dehydrated and return to basics until things settle.

I would avoid introducing the sugary stuff first. I would stick with proper greens to start off with. I have to start with my own lil guy as well and it makes me nervous for that very reason.

:)

By the way, is this true diarrhea like real runny or is it mushy poop? Diarrhea is considered an emergency as it is much too easy for a rabbit to get dehydrated so if that is the case than a vet visit would be recommended. I didn't want to alarm you but I think it is something that needs to be said because if that is truly the case, it can indeed be potentially fatal. Usually, it's more like mushy poop so that can be dealt with but I shouldn't have made the mistake to assume! Sorry about that.

Even for an adult rabbit, carrots have so much sugar that they should only be a treat. The first veggie should really be a green, like a tiny bit of parsley, romaine lettuce, cilantro, or wheat grass.

PS-Nela, that wasn't my comment but Haley's you were agreeing with. I did a double take & thought I was very forgetful about a post I must have just made, lol.

I've read that veggies should be slowly introduced at 4 months, and fruit at 6 months.

Hope that helps!

No no, I am sure you posted and deleted just to prove I am a looney!!! :pHahaha oops sorry about that! I meant to say I agree with Haley.

My vet said to start out with parsley and cilantro and then 2 weeks after if all goes well, move on to romain lettuce. This is all starting at 12 weeks...
