Joining a food co-op

Has anyone or does anyone here belong to a food co-op? Do you think it's worth it? I have a chance to join one and while it looks good I'm still a bit uneasy. We only order once a month and it's 50 dollars a year to join. What do you all think?

Not sure if its the same thing in NZ, but I belong to organic food co-op group, no cost to join, we all just get together once a fortnight, make a bulk order to keep delivery costs down and once a year its my turn to go about the ordering and distributing of the parcels and boxes that arrive.
I can't afford much but get some basics like flour and carrots.
Its quite a lot of fun.
Might be a good opportunity to get to know other people.
