Just a bit of background. My wife was laid off a couple of days after new years. She has been looking for work since then, the problem is unemployment ends on June 30th. She has had a few interviews and we've probably been there, but they go with the other person.

To top it off, my company is shutting down for the week of the 4th of July and I have to use my last four days of vacation to cover that period. So if my company closes down in the future for any more days I will have to take them unpaid.

So my wife is desperately seeking work before the end of the month. She went to apply at a position at a Aldi's grocery store, which started taking applications at 6am, she got there and at nine and the line was around the building.

She hasa interview this afternoon at Kroger's, so I am hoping it will pay enough to be worth her time and that she will get call backs from some of the other applications and resumes she has submitted.

I am also looking for a part time job so I could use some good vibes too. Things are getting rather desperate around our house especially with recent vet bills.

So if you have any good luck laying around doing nothing we could use it.

Thanks

I'm sending all the positive thoughts your way! My husband was out of work for 10 months in 2003, so I know your struggles first hand. I hope you both find something to help you get back on your feet soon!

My husband and I were both out of work for few months. It got to the end of his unemployment and we were starting to panic. Thank god we both found great jobs with good benefits. So keep the faith.

Well, I am so sorry to hear this. Times are so bad right now. My husband's work is slow which is normal for an election year....... but it's been tight. Gas is killing everyone in one form or another. Businesses are folding, because they can't afford to ship their products or the increase of their costs for raw materials has become too much to add to their retail product cost.

The news is talking about now how by July 4th oil will be at $150 per barrel.

prayers your way Wabitdad and to Wabitmom too. I hope you both find something that pays good and sssssoooooooooooooonnnnnnn.

I don't know what you or your wife have experience in - so I don't know if these ideas will help at all.

If your wife goes to www.Narms.com and turns in a profile - she may be able to get work as a merchandiswer - it depends upon how many merchandisers are already in your area. The thing about merchandising is that it is not always a set number of hours per week. For instance - next week I'm working 10 hours for one company - and about 3 hours for 2 other companies. Not bad...just not great. Still yet ... it is something.

There is a manual there she can read (for free) about merchandising and learn some of the terms, etc. The only problem with merchandising is that sometimes you have to drive - so make sure the two of you consider the closest stores to you and only list that town.

Another option is to work from home. Here are some links for you:

http://www.wahm.com/forum/ - go to the third forum down and read

http://www.workplacelikehome.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=8

Phone work from home will require a quiet place to work - like an office or something. I was making $9 per hour as a customer service representative for a major credit card - working 25 hours per week. I worked for Alpine Access.

There's also Rat Race Rebellion:

http://www.ratracerebellion.com/job_postings.htm

I hope these sites help you in some way. I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have about Merchandising and if you or your wife want to contact me or have me contact you over the phone - you can drop me a pm and I can call and talk a bit about merchandising.

Oh - if merchandising sounds like it might be interesting - then go to Narms and search for jobs. There is a way to do it where you find what companies normally have vendors in your state and you can go to each of their websites and apply.

Good luck....or at least better luck than you've been having!

I thought I'd go ahead and share a bit about merchandising here because there may be other folks looking for work and they might like to find out what this is.

Here is my schedule for next week:

Monday - 4 hours in Walmart for one company - I will be stocking some cosmetics for Rimmel, putting out a special display for perfume, and putting "New" stickers on some new perfumes they're receiving. $36 for the 4 hours

1-2 hours in their electronics department checking on some of the electronics (doing an audit to see what is and isn't on display and stocking the items that aren't there if they have them) - $10 - $20 (depending upon how long it takes)

Tuesday - Family Dollar - straightening up the greeting cards, putting in the new greeting cards from the last order and placing a new order - 75 minutes @ $9 per hour

Dollar General - Greeting cards - 1 hour and putting out new Fruit of the Loom items (and pulling the discontinued items) - 1 hour ($18 total)

Wednesday- Dollar General #2 - straighten up jewelry (30 minutes), straighten up eyeglasses, pull broken ones, place order if necessary (30 minutes), Fruit of the Loom project (see above) 60 minutes - total 2 hours work - $18

Dollar General #3 - Fruit of the Loom project - 1 hour - $9

Thursday & Friday are currently "days off"...

There are companies that will pay $10 - $12 in my area for a store visit once or twice a month.

For myself - I have picked up jobs with 2 companies that will give me 5-10 hours per week (and maybe more) - plus jobs with 2 companies that are 1-2 hours once or twice a month. My pay ranges from $9 - $10.75 per hour (I have experience and this is an area where it is hard to get merchandisers).

By the way - another place to check for extra work is:

http://www.certifiedfieldassociate.com/

They only pay like $6 - $8 per hour or project or whatever ... but if the stores are close to you...at least it is something! They are probably the easiest company to break into because they are low-paying - but at least you get experience.

Oh - the best way to check on any company to see what their reputation is...is to visit..

Wow Tiny's Mom what great idea's.. WabbitDad I will help look as well - I think my parent company has an office over there and will see if they have any listing (insurance company - great benefits)..

Hey, thanks for the ideas! She said she is going to check them out.

She has been doing clerical, data entry, office manager and customer service. Her last job at an RV manufacturer was working with parts dealers on product return and determining how much credit they would receive etc.

Sending good vibes your way for both you and your wife, Wabbitdad...

I've been in the unemployed position too...several years ago I lost a job I'd been at for almost 8 years when the store closed, and - erroneously thinking I'd be okay - took a month off to relax, since it was Christmas time anyway. Well, that one-month break turned out to be just over two years of unemployment. I was a single mom, living in an area where most positions required biligualism (French/English), I didn't have any computer skills, and the gov't had just gone through a major housecleaning and laid off thousands of people - with more skills than me - just a few weeks after I lost my job.

All I'd like to say is, even though it was quite tough, and I struggled several times to maintain hope during that time of my life, once it turned around I managed to fall into the best job of my life. So my blessings to you guys...and even though it might not seem like it right now, it will get better...

Wishing you guys lots of luck I'm not working at the moment, as I haven't got a visa, and won't for some weeks yet, so I know how tight things can be.

However, there are so many jobs here in Edmonton - I don't suppose you want to immigrate :p;)

Prayers and good thoughts coming your way.....we've been there and done that! Times are really hard....wish the government would quit telling us that we're not in a recession....kind of like the Wizard of Oz...."pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!" Wishing you and your dear wife the very best!
