I just gave my mini lop his pellets, and he went to scarf them down like he usually does. After about 30 seconds, he jumped into his litter box and just jumped from side to side over and over, and then he made this loud gagging sound. He made the same sound again a few seconds later and just a tiny bit of brown liquid came out. Then be just jumped out and went back to eating his pellets.

I know rabbit vomit is very rare. Was he choking maybe? What is this? He’s acting totally fine now.

Keep an eye on him, seem like he was choking. After a bunny chokes, they can get sick if you are unlucky.

Better to feed him in another way if he scarf down the food. So he won’t choke again.

Myself mix my pellets with 2 different pellets typ. Just because I have a bunny that easily start to choke.

One type it’s larger bites while the other are the small ones. It make her to calm down while eating because the large bites makes that she can’t eat too fast.

Also spreading out the food so the bunny need to find the food can slow down the eating or putting it into a treat ball.

It could be choking, I personally never had any experience with this, but I would advice you to keep a close eye on him in case it happens again

Good advice and keep an eye..but personally..if it doesn’t repeat..I don’t think I’d spend money mixing food unless it is an issue.. I have learned recently..actually this week... I became a sort of hypochondriac with my 100 animals on my farm..I was taking pictures of tons of them and posting pictures on my many forums looking for problems...of course...there was always some tiny issue to fix..like my rooster could use monistic on his comb because it’s not bright red...my one hen looks ragged because she’s his girlfriend so I need to make her a cloth saddle..which I’m going to do..but the list went on...so..watch him...if it doesn’t happen again it could be just one of those moments...in my opinion take that for what it’s worth ..lol

The biggest risk with a choking episode is the rabbit developing aspiration pneumonia. Either a vet check now by an experienced rabbit vet, or keep a very close eye and any sign of respiratory issues developing or your rabbit seeming off, immediately get to the vet.

I actually experienced the same thing recently. See here.

To prevent this from happening again, you can try putting the pellets in a treat ball or scatter feeding them.
