ok. this is the assement so far.
1. the b 1. Background â how the church was formed. Methodism began in the early 18[sup]th[/sup] century. John Wesley was one of its leaders. During this time a number of people within the Church of England thought that it needed to be changed/renewed.
In 1730, John Wesley joined a group of Oxford University students. The students gathered for scripture study, prayer and the Lordâs Supper.
To these students this was their method of there religion. So the name came about as Methodists.
John Wesley went to America, but his missionary failed. During this time, John had been heard to say that he had an encounter with God and felt gentle warmth. He then went on with missionaries in Ireland and England.
John was a great organiser and he encouraged those who followed him to meet in groups like he attended in Oxford.
Johnâs brother, Charles, was very caring for the poor, widows, orphans and prisoners. They also helped and protested against the mistreatment of coloured people. This care was a feature of the Methodists.
John Wesley never wanted to cause a split in the church, but after his death in 1791, Methodism split from the Church of England.
