Is there a way to put a cap on the number of new topics?

I hope I don't sound rude, and I hope other people are seeing this as well.. is there a way to limit new topics on certain boards per member? I just feel as though some of the boards are being plagued with useless threads that are nothing short of spamming links just to get post counts up? I feel if this was a newer member it would be dealt with but just because it is a valued member it is 'okay'.

Sorry if I sound rude I just wanted to know if this is annoying anyone else and if there is a way to limit it for everyone in future.

Hey Fran, I do agree with you.

My goodness some are having competitions to see who will post the most on a given day. Some ot the topics are uselsess. Now saying I could have posted some post that were useless too, but I really try to search to see if their is a blog already on the topic. Sometimes I know their is one but I honestly can't find it.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one.

The first forum I was a member of was relatively unmanned, the mod only came in every now and again and the owner hadn't been seen for years. However there were lots of half member-made rules that would be enforced strictly. You would get politly told off for posting twice in a row, you would get told off for posting numerous posts or even inquiring about post counts and titles (the forum had those little titles when you hit different post numbers). I guess this place is actually rather refreshing from that, but some of that old forum is still in me. When I first came here I found it weird how people posted about how many posts they had made, like 'Yay, I'm at 1k posts!' etc... and that other people CONGRATULATED them! It seemed alien to me. I have nothing against that anymore, its nice, but I guess it still gets on my nerves!

As far as I can see there is only one real offender but others are helping. There are so many posts with just plain links like 'this is fun' or 'look at this'. I feel it is pushing lots of other topics off the first board, and things are getting overlooked because people are posting pointless things....

I agree but i disagree, here is why, if you tell people you can only post good things then people might be more hesitant to post at all, thus making us come off as unfriendly. But I also agree now that i went through the posts for today about all the silly posts i have been seeing. Then we also have a choice of reading the posts or not, most of which i do not read and/or comment on anyway. Then what about the let your hair down section that is there for non bunny related topics , to me an area for us to just vent and whine and talk about whatever issues, important or not.

As far as topics of congratulation on people who hit milestone posts, this is sometimes done in the Today on Ro, but sometimes peoples post count isnt always congratulated and people get excited about making those milestones, i know i did, but most also arent getting there by posting mostly silly stuff, so just because there are some bad apples in the bunch doesnt mean that everyone should have to pay.

So now that i have been totally un helpfull, cause i agree and disagree, lol, i cant wait to see what others say, lol.

Fran,

I feel very much the same way. I sort of tried to ignore the situation as a mod saying to myself, "She's only 12...she's bored....when school starts up this won't keep happening...".

But I see its happening another day too.

I imagine the other mods will keep an eye on this and see what can be done. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

I'd also like to hear from others (as I'm sure other mods were) about how you feel about this. That's what we're here for...since many of you may catch things that we don't or have feelings about things that we're not sure if it is irritating others or not.

Honestly I can see where people are bothered.

I myself am not. I have actually checked most of what she has posted and found most to be fun.

I do have an idea on how to control it somewhat. Let me think on it alittle more and see what I can do.

I agree- not in the sense of the post count, but in the sense that perhaps the posts are only being made just to increase post count, and to try and 'win' the competitions over who can post the most in one day....

I don't at all mind seeing one person post 100, even 200+ times a day, it's just when it's only done in a bid to beat someone in the Top Posters thread and not because you really want to say something or reply to someone....

Saying that, I know what it's like to be home all day bored with nothing to do.... :p

I can't talk if I see myself hitting a certain point. Let's say I am 3 away from hitting 50. I HAVE to make those three post!

I know, its a difficult thing, I've been thinking about this all day and perhaps I shouldn't have asked about the post limit thing, I really wanted to vent and see if I am the only person who finds this incredibly annoying.

Some of the posts are good, I wouldn't look down on them, but just the sheer amount, and that fact I know it is down to competitiveness, is what gets me. However, some posts have annoyed me. For example, the hand painting one was really cool and interesting, but the 'Veggie meal plans' was just a link.... there is no effort in it, there is no 'Hey, are you a vegetarian? I was browsing this site and I found this, it looks really good' etc. It was clearly a link she stumbled on and posted for no reason. If I posted a link to every interesting site I found the boards would be full!

I understand it is impossible to make a rule, as you can't apply it to one person.

They only way I can think of it is maybe posting a topic in the Chat About the Forum section, just a 'polite notice' for all about how having more posts does not gain you more respect, or mean you are more trustworthy, or a better person. That way we are not directly having a go at anyone, just putting the message 'out there' for them to find themselves, and for everyone to think about.

EDIT: Nice going Ali....

I like Ladybug's phrase that she posted...

"don't count your posts, make you posts count."

:)

EDIT:

Although, I would totally be lying if I said I didn't look at my post count lol.... :p

So I combined some. In PMs we have talked and are going to do 5 fun sites/facts/pictures of the day. So that way we limit the amount of posting, threads and so on.

I may join in so in can encourge her to keep up with it.

I find it super annoying and posting random things that that person probably doesn't even fully care about it. The titles are very "non appealing", it makes people not want to click on them...especially if they are being repediately (sp?) posted.

:?

She's not doing any harm is she? If the threads bother people just don't read them. Or put her on ignore if it bothers you that much? :?

Ah, well, then they're easy to avoid, no? ;)

I think the 'make every post count' phrase is great, and Peg's effort to redirect the energy was awesome. :) If I had been able to post (haven't been able to in days), I would have done the same thing, but wouldn't have come up with a redirect as good.

Gentle reminders to the girls would begood.

While I don't mind the post countsand I don't read those sections anyway given my time constraints, it puts too much pressure on the search index, so unless they have content, I'd rather not see high post counts.

I thought I saw discussion about getting a lot of members to sign in at once, though. That would be a good project to put them on as well. And I can give them a bit of a boost by adjusting the length of time the counter takes into consideration -- ie: it's setto show all posters logged in for 40 minutes, if I change that to a couple of hours, the count will go up, I'm sure that will tickle them to no end. ;)

I mentioned that in my pm. About the search thing. Wasn't sure if it was true. Glad to know I didn't lie. :p

If anything I don't mind putting my hat in to work with them. They have so much energy all I would have to do is guide them. :biggrin2:

Ali - you would be AWESOME at helping them redirect their energy....the forum can really use their enthusiasm...just maybe...directed a bit.

I've pm'd Baby Bunnies today about other things and she really is a sweetie. I have to say that the pms back and forth have been just...sweet. I'm trying to remember now what it was like for me when I was that age to have lots of energy and bored. Problem is...that's too far back I think...

Anyway - I think you'd be great at that and combining those cooking threads was a great idea....

YOU GO ALI! YOU ROCK!

I am just used to kids. When you have a large family like mine! Seriously one grandma has 11 grand kids, 3 greatgrand kids. Another has 17 grand kids. Than one granddad has 15 grand kids and 3 great grand kids. Want me to go on?:p

ETA: Than again keep in mind that she has been asking to help so much and is told that eventually we will have her help.

Okay its really annoying to see pointless posts left and right. I agree. But maybe if we tell them they need to keep it to the "let your hare down" section that will work.

Also, Pipp is genius when she said we should redirect their energy to the "most people logged on at one time" project. We can pick a day and time and have them basically promote the heck out of that and that way their pointless posts will at least help others to be a part of our "rabbitsonline book of world records" record breaking experience :).
