I have an xpen and each panel is 28" long (a little longer than your average xpen) however at the moment it is shaped in a rectangle (6'10" by 28") and only one rabbit lives in it.
If I were to transform it into a square the measurements would be 56"x56" which is approximately 4.6 feet. Is that big enough for TWO average sized rabbits? 4-6lbs? I do plan on making like a second level but I don't know how to make one. I currently have a shelf which is only 40" by 27.5" and 18" off the ground and the rabbit that lives in there has no problem jumping up on it - he jumps onto my bed all the time which is 24" off the ground, however I want to make an actual LEVEL and not just a shelf. I want to make the second level 55"x55" with a small cut out where i will put a ramp so my rabbits can get up it easily. This second level will be 24" off the ground (a little taller than the second shelf I have in my rabbits at the moment, because I want to encourage them to use the ramp because I'm worried that they may hit their heads if they tried to jump through the opening) But I mean ramps DO take up a lot of space just because of how they are, so Im still a bit wary about that.
I am going to take out the second level today because it's old and my rabbit has been biting/ scratching at the vinyl stick on tile so it is now all mangled and gross - I will probably skip the stick on tile and buy the stuff that comes in a roll next time. What are your opinions? I have considered making an NIC cage, however I DID try to make one and it was not sturdy at all. Plus I can imagine it being very costly with the plywood and all, however money isn't really an issue, but if what I have now is okay then I'd rather keep what I have. I am moving in a couple of years, so I will have more room then - hopefully.

Rather than a ramp, you could try a box or small shelf (or two) positioned under the hole - they are very agile and that should get them up/down.

On size, it really depends how long they'll spend in the cage. It sounds fine space wise presuming they'll get some out time for exercise too?

Of course, they always get time out - separately as they are not bonded yet since my youngest is only 3 months. And I hope they will come out more after they are bonded. I actually have thought of a better idea with the xpen, i could buy a couple of those small loop things that you drill into the wall? I forgot what they are called but they are small, and I could just attach one side the xpen to that and the same on the other side, so instead of my rabbits actually being in an "enclosed xpen" the bare wall would act as the 4th wall/ enclosure. Sounds complicated sorry! But this will make the cage bigger. hopefully it will work

I can picture what you mean and I think it's a excellent idea :) Having it fixed to the wall will make it very sturdy and if you do want to add levels you can just put shelves on the wall!

since they get time outside the cage each day, that size is more than big enough (especially with a level).

Thank you, maybe someday I could even get a 3rd bunny! just kidding, for now anyway. 2 is plenty enough for me at the moment. Thank you!
