I have always loved writing stories and I have lots of unfinished ones and I have finally decided to finish one and try and get it published, then hopefully i will get a bit of cash from it and can use the money for bunnies and stuff.

How much money do you get from a published book?

I found this interesting. It gives the cost of self-publishing a children's book . . .

Editing - $295 - $695
Art Editing (optional) $695
Illustration - $1495 - $10,000 +
Printing (Test 25 books) - $175
Second (test 25 books) - $175
3000 Main print run - $3,874 (1000 copies - $2.75/book, 2000 copies - $1.65/book, 5000 copies - $1/book, 10,000 copies - $.65/book

You could always start by running off your own copies (spiral bound). It's a cheap way to get started.

I'm sure it is different there than it is here- but in the US you can sell a book for anywhere from $500 (thinking of the romance books - if you're a first time author) - to a % of the sales of the book. I only know about the Christian Romance genre......but I'm going to share an example.

With many companies - you get a % of the sales of the book - we're going to pretend that the book retails for $10 (what the customer pays) and wholesales for $6 (what the store pays). Let's say you make 10% of the wholesale price per book....that means for every book sold you would make .60 (10% of the $6).

But if you get an "advance" - it is an advance against your royalties. So let's say the company likes the book or the idea and offers you a $600 advance.

That means that they are paying you for the first thousand books that they think will sell. (1,000 books X $6.00 = $6,000 and 10% of that is the $600). This means you won't make more money from the book until copy 1,001 sells.

Usually royalties are sent out quarterly - I think - but I suppose they could be monthly.

Getting a book published is not easy....you need to find a publisher who publishes that type of book and has an opening in their publishing schedule for it. Also - it can take months to get to print once they agree to buy it.

Good luck with your idea.

Depends what type of book, but you would probably find difficulting getting a publisher. You could easily get prints done yourself privately. We did that for my Great Great Uncles book. He wrote his 'story' called 'The Boy at Knole' because there is a famous historic house in the town near me called Knole House where he grew up as a servants child. We printed 200 copies and they are outand about, in the local libraries, in a few small book shops, in Knole House library, my Grandad library etc. But that was more a 'fun' thing for him and he didn't make any profit, he just wanted to tell his story.

If you keep writing at a young age there is no reason why you can't be an author, but just keep in mind and don't get your hopes up that there are loads of people trying to get published and it doesn't happen for everyone. But Good luck!
