I'm Danielle, and my bun is Dennis... Hopper. We had him for two weeks before we settled on a name. I wanted to name him Smeagol (you know, from Lord of The Rings, Gollum's name when he was still a hobbit. trust me, it fits his personality) but my husband flat out refused. :rollseyes As a joke one day, I suggested Dennis Hopper, thinking he'd just laugh. But it stuck.
We were given him as a gift in December from a friend of ours. She knew we had been thinking about getting a rabbit for a while and found out another one of her friends was trying to find a new home for her bunny because she couldn't take care of him anymore (why, I don't know). So I came home one day, and there he was! The only information we were given was that he was about 8 months old at the time, and they thought he was a girl, although it didn't take an expert to see he had testicles. We aren't sure of his breed, but after looking at examples on the ARBA's website, I think he might be an English Spot, although he is lacking the back stripe.
I am 28 years old and have never had a pet other than fish before, so this has been a huge learning experience for me. My husband had an angora rabbit as a child, but it doesn't seem like he knows very much about rabbits in general, so we've been researching as best we can.
We recently moved and that interrupted all progress we had been making in bonding with the bun, and have had to really start over. He wouldn't come out at first, and at first I just let him sit in his cage all day if that is what he wanted. Lately, he started thumping really late at night, even though I can't find anything that could be startling him or making him angry. So I've been devoting more time to learning how to understand my bun a bit better. I found out that a lot of the behavior he had at our old apartment was really good, I just didn't know how to read it! He would bump me for no reason and run away, now I understand that he wanted to play. He would sort of circle me when I stood up, he would make that soft, huffing sort of noise when I gave him his treats, he was always chinning my feet when I sat on the floor with him. I wish I had understood him then because I think we would be better bonded now! We are making up ground though, so I am hoping I can get some tips on getting him more active and interested, as well as communicating with him and understanding what he is trying to tell me.
Sorry if that was long. Look forward to making new friends here and becoming a better bunny mum!
