I had been arguing with myself for a while overwhether I could handle more rabbits right now. TheoreticallyI would always love to have more, but is it fair to them?Well, there was an add in the shopping paper (all classifieds and ads)a few days ago for two dwarf hotots, with cage, for$15:shock:. I just had this feeling that they belonged withme.

I called the guy and he said they were his granddaughters.About 1.5 years old, living outside behind his barn. Shewould spend some time with them during summer, but would only visitthem like once every couple of weeks when school was on.Well, school just started and he felt bad about them being completelyalone (except for him feeding them) for another long coldwinter. He had bought them from a local show breeder for $15dollars for the pair as they are not showable, and the cage was from afriend, so he just wanted what he had paid the breeder for them.

I saw them yesterday. I knew I would most likely take themanyway as long as they didn't have any obvious disease. Iwill pick them up this morning. They really need someTLC. Their fur was stained with urine- their only things tosit on other than wire were really old and completely soaked andcaked. They are not used to being handled any more and onewas rather cage aggressive. She didn't want to hurt usthough, just to scare us out of her home. She was gnawing onJames' finger and never left a scratch. The cage looks prettygross, but I'll clean it as much as I can and use it until they startlearning about the litterbox and I get them something bigger. It's fairly roomy for a breeder cage as they are small compared toit. I hate wire-bottom cages in general, though.

Their current names are Flopsy and Mopsy. He wasn't surewhich one was supposed to be which. I have some names in mindbut I won't decide until they get here.

I'll post pics when I have them moved in. We'll be going to get them sometime this morning.

Sounds great! You're doing the right thing, here. I'd wager any other person who would have picked them up would bedoing the same thing as the little girl. Kudos on taking them. Asalways, pictures are a priority. :D

I have a simple solution forthe cage , after you have cleaned it asbest you can , get one of thoseportable torch's, the one that runs offButane bottles You can buy them for I believe 15.00or so at any wallmart , Burn the bottoms ofthe cage then take a wire brushto it to remove allthe burned off residue . then a quickspray with a metalic rustoleum paint and it will looklike new . I have done thismany times and it works very well .

You can use heavy cardboard in thebottom for resting matts ora wide piece of plywood for alanding matt untill potty trainingis complete, and you can movethem into a proper cage .

Good for You taking in 2 deserving rabbits .

I might try that in a while. Right now, I'm doubting we canget them out of the cage without making them panic and possibly hurtingthem. I'm thinking that rubbing alcohol will clean the wiresoff fairly well for now. We'll see.

They will be getting straw mats for their feet. I reallyshould find some more, but they can use the ones mine have gotten tiredof. We also have plenty of cardboard if they destroy thosequickly.

They are both girls, or at least both the same gender as babies wouldhave been obvious by now. I will make an appointment fortheir spay once they start trusting me a bit. I'll trygetting them in on the same day so they can recover together.

Pics will come once I actually get them here.:D

Yeah, that's what I was worried about, too. The majority ofrabbits around here are farm pets, ie they are in a hutch alone in theback yard or by the barn.

Aww wow! Thats great that you have rescued themfrom a awful life. There life with you will be full of goodness. Theysound really cute bless them for being scared :(It is ratherupsetting when you hear stories like that. Definetly would like to seepictures! :DI hope they settle in fine and you can get themto gain your trust. I envy people like you.

The big one.

And the big one again. See the urine stains?

She may look fat, but she feels solid and her skin is tight.I can feel the spine and hips on both of these girls. Wechecked the little one as she was humping the big one, but I couldn'tfind any testicles or anything. She's just feisty andbossy. Their nails were wicked long (and twisted) so we cutthose. The pan on the cage was rusted through so we left thatbehind. We will be setting up the cage over a heavy dutyshower curtain with newspaper for now. Currently it issoaking in our bathtub because it's caked in poop and hair. The girls are running free in our bathroom until the cage isclean. We'll be using the bathroom for quarantine for acouple of weeks.

Their poop is huge and soft- about the size of their eyes. It's absolutely disgusting. I'm hoping that hay and a switchto decent pellets will fix that. They have pooped and peedsince coming home.

I still haven't decided on names. I will be switching thename of my home thread to "The Stee's Stable," though.

Congratulations Naturestee! They do look adorable. And they are lucky for you to takethem in.

I just saw a posting similar to yours at a pet shop bulletinboard. There is a free rabbit looking for a lovinghome. It is a Dwarf Rabbitdoe, one year old Seal Point calledPrecious. Comes with cage and allaccessories. However, mybetter halfwon't go for it.

They look great, all things considered. They should be fantastic little companions in a few months.;)

They sure look relaxed in those pics, did you have muchtrouble getting them out of the cage?
They were too scared to come out on their own. They wouldboth put their front feet out and sniff, then go back inside. We weren't even in the room- we stayed out in the hallway so wewouldn't scare them. James picked them both up to take themout. That little one is quite the spitfire!

Then we had to shoo them back in, when the cage was workably clean.

The big one is much more relaxed and lazy. She lets us touchher without running or batting at us, but she tenses a lot.

This was just taken- finally in a clean cage! Hooray!

Sounds like it went decent then...even Banditwho was handled more and such was like that when he got here withus...just took him some time to adjust....the way they were lookin sorelaxed to me sure seemed like a good sign...hopefully it won't be toohard to get them more socialized...they look like lil cuties! Good jobon the cage...looks like you pulled out pretty decent living quartersfor the time being!

It's official! The names are Fey forthe big one and Sprite for the little one. My littlefairies. :inlove:

They were much more calm today. They ate carrot out of myhands and Sprite came over to me on her own once. She wasalso trying to steal the paper towel out of my hands when I wascleaning their cage. They peed in the litterbox, but most ofthe poop was elsewhere. They needed a bigger litterboxanyway, so I put an extra kitten-sized one in instead of the tinycorner box.

I think they look like the Kodama from Princess Mononoke.James thinks they look like spousal abuse victims.:disgust:Well, okay, Fey does. One eye is ringed with black and theother hardly has any, so she looks like she took a punch.

I'll be posting any more pics on my homethread.

Awwwww, great job. Kudos to you guys. I can'twait to hear how those two girls start to open up and show theirpersonalities. I also can't wait to hear how Mocha and Loki react totheir new siblings as well!

:colors:I am soo happy for you! and alittle jealous. they are beautiful! i have been wondering if i haveenough room for another bunny. i will definately adopt from the HumaneSociety, but i don't want to upset my 2 girls I already have.

Good Luck!
