To get a ferret on not to get a ferret, that is the question.

A few years ago my sister and I had 2 ferrets, we got rid of them each to a different place, then bought mine back... She died a year later... I miss her like Crazy, and miss the fun loving, cute, silly animal all together...

If I didn't have 3 rabbits I could get one... But I am scared a ferret would eat my rabbits... Do you think I could keep the ferret in another room? That way it couldn't get to the bunnies? I could keep a ferret in my sisters room or outside here beside my computer... I dunno, what do you guys think?

Hmmm..I don't know... Rabbits are terrified of ferrets, people who live near me have their rabbit living in a (tiny) hutch on top of a ferret hutch, the poor thing is so afraid, I wish I could rescue it.. :tears2:And rabbits can smell so well, Maddie is afraid of my kitten, she goes crazy if it comes upstairs even with the doors closed.

I wouldn't just be concerned about that though - I'm guessing a ferret is as much, if not more work, as a rabbit, will you really have time to look after another animal? You were saying you found three rabbits a lot of work...:?

I would love a pair of Guinea Pigs, butI don't thinkI will get them because I don't want to sacrifice the level of care my rabbits get. But then I have no experience in ferrets, so I don't know, I'll be interested to see what others think.

Well, whenI used to have a ferret we would take it out for walks in the barn, the rabbits we had out there didn't care, but the chickens did...

I am just thinking I could keep them in different rooms... My rabbits are VERY easy going, and love other animals, cats, dogs, and little annoying kids included...

If I got a ferret it would be my sisters and mine.. Therefore we'd share the work... I was freaking out about having three rabbits, but have calmed down, and since I just took time to breath its been simple.. I have gotten my self into a routine.....

I really want a ferret again :(

:laugh::roflmao:
im sorry! but a ferret cannot eat a rabbit, i had ferrets when i was little near my rabbits , separate cages though. i think if you want it, have the space for it, and have the time to care for another animal, GO FOR IT!!!

Ani-lover, in the wild, a weasel, will eat a rabbit... I had done my information searching before, and joined a ferret forum.... They may not "eat" them, but they CAN hurt them, I know it.

WE had a cat that used to climb over the ferret cage (stupid cat) and it lost a toe when one went into the cage and our "nasty"/moody ferret bit it.

So, you may think its SO funny, but I am SURE a ferret could hurt a rabbit.

Yes a ferret definitely could seriously injure a rabbit, and kill it. :(I don't know if they would eat it.

Shay, it is up to you - if you feel you'll be able to handle a ferret then get one, it will be a big help having someone to share the responsibility. :)I know how you feel about really wanting one, hehe, I really want piggies! :p

Arrggh, I am stressing out... I doubt I could get one anytime soon - I'd have to save up first... But I'd still like to have one so bad...

WhenI lost my ferret (angel) I felt so heart broken, but knew my parents would never let me have another anytime soon.. so I went with just horses, cats, and dogs... Then I got my rabbits. :)

Unfortunately ferrets are bred and trained to kill rabbits, although a friend of my mum's once found a baby ferret in her rabbit hutch years ago.:shock:Thankfully her bunnies were unharmed!

Shay - I'd say if you feel that you can keep your bunnies safe then go for it.:)

I know of people who breed rabbits to feed to thier ferrets.

If you think about it, a ferret will eat a chicken, or a bird, so they will eat a rabbit.

Anyone remember the story of my nethie does and my felime doe? They got eaten, by weasels..(Ferrets are VERY much like weasels).

So, Anyway...

I think if I can convince my sister to share the work and responsibility with me, I will get one.

This got me thinking about my old ferret Angel, so here of sme picso f my baby before she got sick and died.

I miss her.

I voted no. Not because I don't think you should have one or are incapable of taking care of it but because I think you should save your money to spay and neuter your bunny bunch first. I've always wanted a ferret too btw. :) Angel looks like a sweetheart.

I agree, I should save to nuter my buck (I can't get my does spayed- we dont have vets around here who will do them) however, my sister also REALLY wants a ferret, and she works, and can afford to buy one... I am sure she'd wait unitl Ash had been nutered to make me pay her back.

Please do not bring a ferret into the home. Your bunnies are your top priority right now. You should do more research and see about getting your female rabbits spayed. I would hate to see them die of uterian cancer :(.

I researched ferrets before I got my bunnies in Janruary of this year. They are EXPENSIVE, very very very very expensive. They require annual vet visits and shots....just like cats. Their diets are complex, and they require lots of training. Their supplies can also add up....they need a huge cage and lots of hammocks/fleece beddings.

If you get a ferret from Petco or Petsmart (Marshall Farm Ferrets - they have two tattooed dots in their ears), their lives will be shortened and almost all ferrets from Marshall Farms develops adrenal disease....which will cost you roughly....thousands of dollars at the vet's office to treat/cure the disease.

Marshall Farms is one of the top breeding mills in the country for ferrets and Beagles....and now rabbits (Boutique Bunnies by Peter's Rabbits...aka...Marshall Farms) :X. By purchasing a Marshall Ferret, you are supporting Marshall Farms and their horrific animal lab testings....which they burn/torture/abuse/ect ferrets and Beagles in their labrittories. Marshall Ferrets act "drunk" and can be harder to train than reputable breeder ferrets, due to their improper breeding.

The best way to go when bringing a ferret into the home is by buying from a reputable breeder....which are rare. You will more than likely have to ship one into you, which will be very expensive.

Adding a ferret to the home....would be like adding three more rabbits to your home. My friend, Matt, has a ferret....and she is fiesty. She is way more spazzy and craves more attention that any rabbit that I have seen...or dog...for that matter.

Ferrets can...and will when given the chance.....kill a rabbit (and I don't just mean by stopping its breathing). If the ferret got into the rabbit's cage, one bite to the rabbit could result in a nasty absess (and vet bills), or worse....it could shock the rabbit...even worse....cause a heart attack.

I vote no. I think you should focus more on your rabbits and what they really need right now. I also think with school and everything...a ferret is not the right thing to add to the home. You should research and prepair yourself....then add a ferret into your home when you get your own place, possibly...or when you have your own job to take care of all the expenses.

I totally agree with Undergunfire, ferrets should not be around rabbits. I have a very good friend who helps out in a ferret shelter, she has told me about the amount of work they are and the vet bills that add up to Big Money. They also have the Musty smell even if they have been fixed which can totally smell up you house.

Another friend of hers had there hampster killed by a ferret because it was loose in the house and got to the poor little guy. They were devestated.

Just my:twocentsbut like alot of others have said save your money just in case your bunnies get sick as Vet bills will be costly.

I have had a ferret beofre, and know of the prices they cost, etc.... However, yesterday when working with my dog on her Agility, I have decided Agility and Rabbits matter more to me right now..

I dont need all the animals I have as it is, and one morewouldn't be a good idea, thanks for the info anyway guys!

I used to have a lot of guinea pigs, but over the years they dwindled down in numbers.

I had a friend bring over a ferret once. I pet sat it for 3 weeks and it was horrible. The ferret slipped out of the room while I was cleaning the cage - found the downstairs room where my GPs were and it was an awful fight trying to get it off my one GP.

The GP lost an ear and had severe facial wounds. I was bitten bad enough to need stitches (didnt get them, but should have - and have scars to prove it) and the ferret was frenzied the entire time afterwards while at my home.

I voted no as well.
I am not really familiar with Ferrets as pets so I can't give my opinion on that.
I do agree with those who have suggested concentrating on your rabbits, especially spayng/neutering them.
It was just a few weeks ago that you were considering rehoming Sisi because you didn't feel you had time to give to her like she needed.
Missing a loved pet is very hard. Grief comes and goes. Some days it's worse than others. It's natural to want another but one needs to look at their circumstances and make a decision based on maturity and what would be best for you and your pets at that particular time.
Doesn't mean it's permanent. At some point in the future you may be able to add another ferret when the circumstances are right. You will feel so much better about yourself for making a mature responsible desicion.
I so understand your feelings. I would love to have a whole pack of Great Danes, and Beagles and assorted Spaniels but I know my limits, so I live vicariously through those breeds owners :)

Hug your Bunnies and dogs when the going gets tough, even write a letter to your ferret. These things will help the missing.
