I'm pretty overweight. And I have to go to my college orientation tomorrow, and the campus is HUGE. And I'm going to have to walk a very long ways 4 to 5 times to and from different buildings. And it's extremely hot. I'm actually scared of having a heart attack! I have asthma and will be bring my inhaler, along with 3 bottles of ice water stuffed in my backpack.

Any suggestions for me? I'm only 21, and there's got to be other overweight students on that campus who don't drop dead. Am I worried for nothing? ANy advice or suggestions?

I believe your concerns are certainly valid. I would phone the office and ask forideas on how other students with health issuesget around campus. (Some campuses have shuttles).

Shuttles? Really? I'll definitely be asking tomorrow about that option.

In fact, one part of the paper says that we can each lunch at the Pentegon Dining Hall. Want to know where that is at? Almost 3 miles on the other side of campus. (We already have to park about 1/2 mile to get to where the main orientation part is being held). I can't see them expecting a student to walk 3 miles to go eat lunch. Which is why I am bringing my own tomorrow. But still, now that you mention it, I would definitely think that they would maybe have a shuttle of some sort.

University of British Columbia is huge, it's basically it's own little city! And I have to walk across the whole campus between some classes. I'm not over weight, but I end up huffing and puffing by the end of it. There are shuttles, my friend who was recovering from a shattered femur had to take one some days.

I can totally understand your concerns, but perhaps try to look at it as an excellent way to help lose some weight? All that walking is going to help increase your cardiovascular fitness. As long as you don't push yourself too hard at first, and work your way up to more walking, you should see some benifits to walking so much.

I wish you lots of luck in your new year at college. It's so much fun, and such a different atmosphere to high school.

Orientation is over, and I made it! WOOOOOOO!!!!

It was semi-fun. Never walked so much in my life, holy poop... I had to have lost 10 pounds! I walked almost 2 miles just to one building alone. And over the course of two days, I had about 15 buildings to go to. *Thud*
