For the last couple of days I have been watchingthe State Funeral for Gerald Ford. He certainly was welllikeD and well respected by many people including people from theopposite party. I was very touched watching this he reallyseemed like a m=nice gentleman. I thought Jimmy Carter spoke so veryhighly of him.

The news announcers said that he didn't run for Vice President orPresident. I knew he became President when Nixon resigned, but my question is how did he become Vice Presiden?

Also why do people hold their hand above there heart when they are singing/playing the your National Anthem?

Gerald Ford was chosen by Nixon to replace hisfirst Vice president after his resignation. Then Ford becamepresident when Nixon resigned. Thus, Nixon and his VP wereelected, but Ford was appointed.

"As a result of unrelated scandals in Maryland, Vice President Spiro T.Agnew resigned in 1973. Nixon nominated, and Congress approved, HouseMinority Leader Gerald R. Ford as Vice President.

Faced with what seemed almost certain impeachment, Nixon announced onAugust 8, 1974, that he would resign the next day to begin "thatprocess of healing which is so desperately needed in America."

"During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facingthe flag with the right hand over the heart.Men notin uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and holdit at the left shoulder, the hand being over theheart.Persons in uniform should render themilitary salute at the first note of the anthem and retain thisposition until the last note. When the flag is notdisplayed, those present should face toward the music and act in thesame manner they would if the flag were displayed there.
