OMG!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so friggin' excited! I have been looking into following a course on animals... However, going back to school is quite a challenge in my situation.
Well guess what? I found it!!! I won't need to go back to college or anything. The course is being offered as a distance-learning program. All textbooks are included in the tuition fee. I am absolutely thrilled!!!!!! They sent me the info today and it looks great. The only thing i didn't like much is that their is no hands on learning when doing it this way but what I will do is find a vet who will let me do some hands on work with them. :biggrin2:
"You'll learn about anatomy, physiology, surgical assistance, emergency medicine, pharmacology, lab procedures, breeding and other key topics - pertaining to a variety of species. We'll teach you critical veterinary techniques used to treat illnesses, mend injuries, ease discomfort, improve nutrition, and increase life spans. :biggrin2:
There are also lessons on exotics and wildlife. I know that the course might not be as good as college itself but I am very good with book learning and I am hoping to pitch in some volunteer hours at a vet's and get more practical help. Like to replace the stage I would have had through college. I will get an accredited diploma at the end and it is a recognized institution.
Therefore, if all feels good with the call to the college tomorrow, I will be officially enrolling into the Animal Care Specialist program. :pinkbouce::thankyou:

That is really great. Who is the college?

I'm asking because I know there are some out there that are scams...so you want to make sure they're certified w/ one of a few different organizations - I think maybe the Distance Learning one?

I used to know all this stuff...I'm so excited for you.

Congrats! Learning is always good, wether at a college or not ;) Hope it all goes well for you! :)

Jessi

Thank you! I definitely agree with what you said about learning. I love to learn. It'll be great learning all about animals! What I love about the distance learning, other than being home, is the fact that I get to study only the animal part. In college you have so many extra courses :?

:biggrin2:I'm still all smiles today :biggrin2:

Congrats to you! That's the same course I was considering taking, but had put it off because of finances (and time constraints). You'll have to let us know how it goes once you begin it...I'm curious to find out what it really is like. The way I looked at it when I was considering the course, even if it's not hands-on, there should still be a ton of good info to be learned that will come in useful in many ways. And if you find a vet who will be willing to give you hands-on experience, all the better!

I'm excited for you!! :D

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
The college just called me!!! I am officially enrolled :biggrin2:I even got my temporary student ID number. Wow I can't begin to explain how excited I am. I get my textbooks and cd-roms in 7-10 business days. :biggrin2:I didn't know about the cd-roms and I asked if there would lots of visuals to support the program so that is when she told me about them. I am just so so thrilled. I can't wait to get my books! Plus I got a 100$ rebate. And, best of all... This course is completely refundable for Canadian students!!! :biggrin2:Can you imagine? I get to do it for free!
It's so wonderful that I found this!
Bassetluv, I will definitely tell you all about it.;) It is much less expensive than college and much better for me in terms of schedule. I really hope that it will be just like I expect it to be.

I agree with Jessi, learning is great!

If you're looking to know what your job prospects are with that course, though, I'd email every vet you can find and ask them what they think.

I know that course is not considered accredited by other institutions (no big deal to me),and it's not a 'high grade' education, but if it will get you knowledge and a job, go for it.

Check out www.ripoff.com for people's experiences with it, but don't be alarmed when you see it pop up there. Every similar school gets lambasted as well, there are always people unhappy. But it will give you some pointers about what to watch out for, and you can see if the complaints actually seem to indicate you'll never get a job. Further research to augment the emails.

Be prepared to not get offered the same high level vet tech jobs to start that other college grads may get, but still get your foot in the door for the vet office jobs that don't require the degree. You'll have more knowledge than most, and the hands on experience can be further education. If you do well, you will be promoted.

Good luck!

Oh that's the better thing, I'm not doing this for an actual job. I'm doing it because a) I love animals and would love to know more about them b) for my own pets but more importantly for c) I am hoping to have my own smallrescue in the future. :biggrin2:

I never know what the future holds, but if ever I am very serious about it and this course isn't enough, I will do the college course. I'm really not worried about it. :biggrin2:Thanks for the info though, I understand what you are saying :rose:

Awesome! I :hearts that attitude!

I did take a quick peek, and saw that people complained about credits not transferrable, photocopied textbooks and hard-to-reach instructors/advisors, but nothing too alarming at a quick glance, anyway.

Out of curiosity, how much time is devoted to rabbits? Even the vet schools don't devote muchtime to them. You maybe able to teach them a thing or two!

Congrats again!:hugsquish:

Hmmm I cannot tell exactly how much time is spent on them but they do seem to have a whole section on exotics, and a whole section on wildlife. I guess I will just have to find out.

I think that PCDI had a lot of problems when they started off but I think that they have improved a lot over the years. So hopefully, all that will pay off. I'm not worried because it isn't expensive and it's refundable. Plus I have unused school credits still.
