Yesterday james and I visited the SheboyganHumane Society to drop off some supplies. Of course since wewere there, we had to check out the animals. In thedirector's office where the donation drop-off is, there was a large penwith two very young, beautiful puppies. We were told thatthey were there for the day while their foster mom was busy. They were only 5 1/2 weeks old and were brought into the shelter at alittle less than 5 weeks by the owner. God that's soyoung! Far too young to be away from their mom, but the ownerdidn't want to deal with "mutts." Their dad was a purebredSiberian Husky and their mom was a beagle/border collie mix, if Iremember right. Good news is, my friend's dad is officiallyadopting one when she's old enough. I'm sure the other willhave a home in no time.

Then aside from the gobs and gobs of cats, there were severalrabbits. One I think was either a silver or a silver fox(both are rare breeds). Large, beautiful, black with silverticking. And I know there's 4H breeders of something likethat around here. They had a few other cute bunstoo. But the bun that really bothered me was a very friendlydutch/dwarf mix who was DECLAWED! A friend who worksthere suspects a certain vet office of doing it, because they have ahorrid track record with rabbits and have been known to declaw ferretswhich is also very very bad. I felt so bad for him and hismutilated little feet.

All four feet. It's not very common, thankfully. Essentially it's like cutting off the toes- likedeclawing a dog. The rabbit can't clean his ears well andwill sometimes have permanent problems with balance and pain, and hisfeet might hurt too much for him to jump much.

The shelter workers are thankfully keeping him on comfybedding. Most of the other cages have wire floors with a matand a litterbox, he has a solid floor with aspen/Carefresh mix and alitter box.

OMG how could anyone be so cruel andstupid!?!:growl: I don't agre with declawing any animals, even cats, but to declaw a rabbit?!

Ugh! I hate declawing! What kind of vets officewould declaw a rabbit! I think it's cruel to declaw any animal. If you can't stand them scratching or what ever, you shouldn't have gotthe pet! There is NO reason why it needs to get declawed..

:angryrantI question people's judgment sometimes.

Alldeclawing - dogs, cats, rabbits, and ferrets - involved cutting off thetip of the toe. It would be like removing the top of your finger at thelast joint

I feel that way about people that de-voice dogs.I will say, I know several of you think that de-clawing even a cat isterrible, but I did advocate getting one of ours done. My reason wasthat this cat had (before getting declawed, she is now a sweetheart) avery mean personality. I have two small children, who were justlearning to crawl at this time. This cat would attack them withoutprovocation, and when she laid open my daughter's face just barelymissing her eye, I made the appointment myself.

I just posted the vet clinic in the WI vetthread- with a warning that it's definately not a safeclinic. The declawing is only suspected to be done by them, but I know of some definate problems by them.

That is down right terrible. :sighIfeel sickened by people and how they treat animals sometimes. A vetshould definatly know better than to do something like that. If youknew for sure I would try to get their medical licence revoked.:ideaToo bad you don't knowfor a fact.

At least he is being made comfortable at the shelter. That just breaks my heart. :disgust:

Speaking of mean people. I was justwatching "Clean House" on the Style Network and the jerk on that showjust told this teenage girl that she needed to get rid ofherrats because he can't design around thecages! Then her dad came in, she's balling, I would'vetold that jerk off. Who does he think he is?

How can anyone be so heartless.... I mean, youmuch absolutely be lacking a heart in order to MUTILATE (that's whatdeclawing is to me...) an innocent animal like that. I would like toknow how they would feel if we chopped off the tips of their fingersand toes.

Why the vet agreed to do such a thing in the first place is beyond me!

Hmm..i wonder if that vets name is Mr Hyde

That's just horrific and plain cruel, poor little bunnies!

WHAT THE ****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That so sick, any vet who performs such surgerys should have their license revoked thats disgusting!
Why cant people leave animals alone, I also hate ear cropping and tail docking!!!!!!!!
Luckily both things are banned here, although you often get animalscome in where the WHOLE litter has had their tails 'gnawed' off by themother in the right spot.. amazing

I had a rottie who didn't have his tail docked. He was always tripping us :thud:(that tail would get your right beindthe knee!) and knocking things over with it. I used to joke that now Iknow why the dock their tails. :sweep

These people just make me sick. I have always loved animals and can'tunderstand how people can't show a little compassion. It is awful.:disgust:

GG, I've never heard of devoicing dogs. That sounds awful!

I hadn't either until I was looking at shelter websites for collies.Collies tend to be a pretty vocal breed, and there was like three outof ten they had on the site that had been de-voiced. That is a sugerythat most vets won't perform, also.

hahahaha my friends dog was a rotti and would wag his tail so hard youwould end up with bruises!!!!!! We used to joke about the same thing

Poor decalwed rabbit! That makes me so damn madtoo, you'd think a vet would know that rabbits need their claws to walkrun and balance. I don't even understand the de-clawing of cats, it'snot common here at all and I think it's cruel. I have an indoors catand I just trim her tails back a little once a week. Just enough tostop her clawing me to death when we play but she can still use them toclimb and scratch herself.

Imagine having an itch and not having the means to ever relieve it

Aww...poor little bunny!! That's terrible!!

And, yes, unfortunatley I've heard of many people that de-voicedogs. In fact, I had a friend who's mom had done itonce...but the pup was stubborn (good girl!!) and somehow managed tobark (though it was more of a squeak) anyway! Poorpuppies!!

Like was mentioned...if you don't like something about an animal, don't GET IT!

:nope::pssd:

I don't know why people insist that animals MUST fit into THEIRlifestyles, instead of changing things in their own so animals andhumans can co-exist peacefully. Heck, that's what I do withmy animals. Instead of getting all mad that my cats clawfurniture, I clip their nails. Or...instead of getting mad atthe cat for playing with this or that, I put it where they cannotaccess it. Or, if the cats insist in getting into a certaincabinet, I rubberband the handles together. Or yetanother...instead of yelling at the cat (which never works...no matterwho the cat, btw) for sticking her paw in the rabbits' cage, I put wiremesh around the outside of the cage (also called hardware cloth), withopenings that are too small for a paw to fit through. Simplesolutions that promote a much more livable way of training my animals, instead of yelling or declawing, or getting angry...when these are justplain instinctual things the kitties will do.

For instance, the other night, a wife of a friend said, "Hey...yourrabbit's eating that newspaper...is that okay?" So, whilecontaining a bit of grr...(this is the same wife of a friend that I'vementioned frustration with before that informs me of the time and thatmy daughter should be going to bed, etc...as if I am incapable of beinga mother...grr!!), I politely and simply told her that it was made withvegetable dye, and that I don't put ANYTHING in or around my animalsthat isn't okay for them to chew/ingest. Their environmentswere created with their instinctual behaviours in mind. It'ssomething I'm teaching my daughter now, so that when she's an adult andinevitably wants her own animal(s), she's already learned thatmost-valuable idea.

:D

Hugs!
