OK, for those of you who don't know, I collect coins. I have been known to buy $1,000 in quarters and dig through them looking for silver ones. I have also bough $500 in dimes, $500 in half-dollars, and $150 in pennies before, too. You find all sorts of crazy crap in the bags (from the coin machines at banks). Whenever I go to the bank, I ask for certain coins to fill out my collection. Since the US Mint has to keep making different coins every year, I've been on my toes. Here is what happened...

While I was at the bank to see if they had any of the new 2009 dollars, quarters, or pennies, I just randomly asked if they had any half dollars. The girl pulled out her little table-top try so I could see it. There was $5.50 in half dollars. My heart skipped a beat. They were all silver versions! Needless to say, I took them. I got 4 solid silver ones (1965 Kennedy), then the rest were just silver "sandwich" coins (squished together with other non-precious metals). Out of the $5.50, only one was a "normal" coin.

Then, Will went in yesterday to deposit his paycheck, and got another silver half dollar for me! I was so excited! It's just cool to find the more "valuable" coins in circulation, still! :p

Also, I just so happened to find these the day AFTER I packed up all of my coin collection stuff (we're moving in August)! :grumpy:

Sorry, I just had to share my moment of nerd-dom! :p

GREAT! We have some Kennedy half dollars too! My husband's grandpa used to keep them and give them to the kids for special things - usually their birthdays!

The Kennedy half-dollars that were minted in the 1960's are silver (or part silver). They aren't the same composition as the coins that are made now. 1965 is almost pure silver, and the following 60's years are partially silver. Quarters and dimes from that time are silver, too. Nickels from the WWII era have silver in them, too.

Sorry... I'm a NERD! :ph34r2

ETA: Will & I went to Little Caesar's Pizza the other night for dinner. We didn't have enough bills to get dinner, so I paid the little high-school girl with half dollars. First, she told me that they didn't accept foreign money... THEN, she had to inspect the coin for the words "United States", then for the face value. I just sat there with a smug little look on my face. I burst out laughing once we were in the car. :p

Once I get my laptop back from the evil jerks at Geek Squad, I will post pictures. They look exactly the same as the newer Kennedy half dollars, but the luster of the coin is different. I will post some pictures when I get my computer back (hopefully soon)! :D
