Ok, so me and my sister might be getting a horse. Did I say might? Yes, might. This horse:

(^^Sammy; 7 year old purebred QH mare; 15 hands; needs training finished)

Anway, this horse is dangling off our fingertips! She would of been ours today, if this one person hadn't been so selfish! Basically, this is the situation. There is this lady who has 5 horses (and she keeps them on her half acre!!!) In the spring and summer she rotates them on two pastures (that aren't hers). Both pastures are about 2-3 acres, and she keeps only 3 to each pasture, and rotates them out and in, and between pastures, etc. So today I ask the guy who owns the 3acre pasture if I can keep the said horse (above) there, and he is really old, didn't really understand us, told us to ask the owner. So, we walked over to the other pasture's owner and asked them. The kind lady said she had NO problem whatsoever with my keeping her horse there....you think everything's right, right? WRONG! So we go and ask the horses's owners, and she's not home, we leave our number and name.

About 45 minutes later, she calls. And I start telling her my situation. She starts saying "oh, there's not enough room for 6 horses. I want my horses to get grass, etc." I'm thinking WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!? So I tell her: "My horse is an easykeeper. She'd only have to be in the 2acre pasture (which also happens to be closest to me, right across the road) and she's an easy keeper. Sammy (the horse i am hopefully getting) will be supplemented by grain, and hay. She won't need a lot of grass!!! She gets along well with all horses, etc. Isn't an alpha mare, at all.

These pastures are for free too! I only have to pay for the maintenence of my horse! no board!

Anyway, what do you guys think? Does this sound dumb or what!? She can keep 5 horses on a half acre (in winter & fall) but won't let 4 at a time share a 3 acre pasture! Her horses are so sweet, they don't even exercise. She doesn't ride them. Did I mention she ONLY feeds them grass? I'm surprised they haven't foundered or coliced!

Replies are appreciated. Thanks

Emily

OMG no! you can't put a single horse on half an acre really! I have a 1/2 acre I could put a horse on and I won't. No way! Putting 6 on 1/2 acre will tear up the ground and make it a mess. That doesn't even begin toget into the health issues!EVEN IF they are grazing in the next pasture. You can't let a horse just have grass either.

In some places, she could be charged with neglect for not having 1 to 2 acres per horse!!!

Have you ever ridden? I can't remember. Finishing that horse could be a lot more than you think! Do you know how to train her for what she will be used for?

Have you discussed how you will pay for all the necessary stuff? It's not cheap to have horses. Let me explain:

Here's what I've paid for just recently:

  • Farrier visit: 2 trims - 1 full set of shoes - $185 (will have the same cost in 6 weeks)
  • Vet Visit for supposed Colic: $182
  • Dewormer paste $28
  • Feed: $90 (about 6 weeks worth - we feed pelleted feed)
  • Joint Supplement for Pokie: $80 6 week supply
  • Horse orthodontist visit for teeth floating (regular 1 x per year): $125 per horse
I'll be going to pick up their shots from the vet this week - about $200. Then we have to administer them.

We grow hay so we don't have to pay for it (which you have to have year round)

You'll need tack and all that. Depending on her use, it will cost various prices.

ALSO: What do you know about her? has she been vetted? She looks cow-hocked or some other problem in the back. She also looks like her hooves haven't been trimmed in a long time the way she's standing. She looks like she could be lame. It could be the photo tho.

leg problems are some of the worst things to deal with on a horse.

What are you planning on doing with her? Shows?

Exactly! I feel like I should call the animal police about this situation! The ground is extremely muddy at her house!

She is 7 years old; She was a twin, and her front foot (not sure which one) had to have lots of surgery on it when she was a filly, because it got mangled with her sister's. Her owners obviously had a lot of money ;) She doesn't have cow hocks, nope. She has been vetted, and that picture is extremely old, but the only decent one i found of her. She just got trimmed the other day. ;)

What are you planning on doing with her? Shows? Maybe some small shows, but mostly just a pleasure and trail horse for now. ;)
