Hi, My name is Taylor and I'm new here from Wisconsin. I am hoping to get a bunny for Christmas. Im looking for opinions on what breed you think I should get? Im really gexcited and have done lots of research on handling, diet, and behavior. I just dont know where to start when looking at breeds. I know that I want someting smaller and "fluffy bunny-like". If you could please include a picture of the breed or the one that you have and the experiance you have had and their personality.

Thanks so much! I'm so excited!:biggrin2:

Hello and welcome to the forum! :)

As for your questions, I would highly recommend adopting a rabbit from a local rescue, for starters. They may not be the tiny, adorable baby bunny you were thinking of, but they are already neutered/spayed, which helps in the long run with health as well as any negative behaviors associated with intact rabbits. :) Aside from that, I would recommend either a Netherland Dwarf, Holland Lop, Mini-Lop, or Mini-Rex (or similarly sized breeds). All of those qualify as "small" rabbits.

I have a Netherland Dwarf male named Toby. He is just a little love. He is my little fur baby. He is spunky, funny, and mischievous. He is very smart and has little games he likes to play. Everyone here is going to recommend a different breed of rabbit, based on what they have owned.

Here is a picture of Toby. Sorry for the mess, he was "helping" with laundy:

Netherland Dwarfs are normally 2-3 pounds and have shorter ears and a more-round head. Toby is about 4 pounds. Nethies tend to be a bit more "high-strung" than other rabbits. If you're looking for a calm rabbit, I've heard lops tend to be more laid-back.

How much research have you done so far? How old are you? Who is going to take care of the rabbit? Rabbits can live 10+ years, so you have to make sure it is the right pet for you!

Welcome!

I also recommend adopting from a rescue. If the rabbit has been in foster care for awhile, you can often find out the rabbit's personaity from someone who's been working with them, before you adopt. (The rabbit already being spayed or neutered is also a plus.)

There are lots of bunnies that can qualify as "small." I have a Holland Lop mix who is pretty small, laid back, and very adorable!

I also have a small girl whose breed I don't know. She is about 4 pounds, and looks like a Siamese cat! She is very energetic and feisty.

Hello! I agree with everyone else, I'd say adoption is best for your first rabbit. My first rabbit was a rescue and he was the best rabbit I ever had. Then you can decide on what you want to do in terms of rabbits and such. I personally found that I have a HUGE love for rabbits and really hope to have a career in showing and breeding them.

As for breeds, I LOVE my american fuzzy lop but I would not reccomend them for first-time rabbit owners as he needs to be brushed 1-2 times a day (for me at least) to prevent matting. Even though I've never had any other type of lop, I'm imagining a holland lop or mini lop could be just as sweet. Dutch rabbits are AMAZING, my first rabbit was a rescue brown dutch and he was seriously the best rabbit I've ever had. ^__^

Good luck on getting your bunny! Im getting 1-2 rabbits for x-mas too, even though I dont get them until April lol.

And this is Diva, my dwarf hotot mix (although I wouldnt reccomend a dwarf hotot, since she's such a spazz lol)

Welcome Taylor :)

I have lionheads they are full size now I should think (well they won't get too much bigger) but like other furry breeds their coat needs a lot of grooming otherwise it gets matted.
If you check my blog you can see pictures of them all :)

It's great that you have joined here to research about bunnies!!
You can prove to your mum that getting you a bunny for Christmas was a good decision!

Hi! I'm also from WI and I also reccomend a shelter. There are a lot of good ones in this state that have more bunnies than they can handle! I volunteer at the Dane County Humane Society ( www.giveshelter.org), and they are very good with their bunnies. They also have a lot right now and will help you find a bunny that fits well with you. A member on here has her own rescue in Waukesha, the Soulmate Rabbit Rescue, and those bunnies are VERY well cared for!!! Here's that website: http://www.linedgroundsquirrels.com/SoulmateRabbitRescueAdopt.html .

I love my holland lop, Jamie(he's in my avatar;)). the lops seem to tend towards really lovey, sweet, in-your-face, want to be with you buns. not that other breeds aren't, lops just seem to have it in there genes or something:p;).

but that's just me, lops are all i've had and Jamie is the sweetest little thing, he constantly surprised me when i first got him with how out going andpeople loving he is. he definantley doesn't fit the shy bunny stereotype:)
ETA:eek:k, here are a few pictures of him

Welcome. I also think you should get a bunny from a rescue. Some even have them online so you can see what is available. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Hi Taylor! Good for you for doing your homework.. Everyone has given you fantastic advice I can only furtherchime in on the "Montra"- go to the Shelter and spend an afternoon and get a "vibe" off of the a bun thatis there and you'll most likely find your soulmate.. Post backstraight away - I'll keep an eye out for your story.
