As i don't want o hijack Splinter's thread I just quickly want to clarify if Nightshade, Magic's father, is a mini or Holland lop. I always thought he was a mini/dwarf as I don't find them all this tiny. He has put on loads of weight over winter but normally weighs something like 4.5 lb.

I just learnt that it is not only the size but rather the shape of the face that distinguishes hollans from minis. Nightshade's face looks rather squashed to me. What do you think? Holland or Mini? Thanks

From reading the BRC description apart from weight I can't make out the difference in facial features. This is what it says for Dwarf/mini

2.HEAD, CROWN, EARS AND EYES.
HEAD - Well developed particularly in bucks. (1)Good width between eyes. Full cheeks and broad muzzle are desirable.
CROWN-. (2)The basal ridge of the ears should appear prominent across the top of the skull.
EARS - Should be(3) broad, thick well furred and rounded at ends. They should be
carried close to the cheeks giving a horse-shoe like outline when viewed from the front.
The inside of the ears should not be visible from any angle when carried correctly. The ears are not measured.

for Mini/Holland it says in comparison (I marked and numbered parts that are the same)

4. HEAD CROWN AND EYES - The head is bold, broad and well developed. The profile of the head is strongly curved with a (1)good width between the eyes, full cheeks and a broad muzzle. The eyes are bold, bright and large. (2)The basal ridge of the ears should appear prominent across the top of the skull to form the crown.
5. EARS – Should(3) be broad, thick, well furred and rounded at the ends. They should be carried close to the cheeks giving a horse-shoe like outline when viewed from the front. The inside of the ears should not be visible from any angle when carried correctly.

Am I missing something?

This is a very critical difference: "The profile of the head is strongly curved" (Holland aka mini).

US Mini Lop (less curvature, a little longer - low head mount . . .

Ideally this in the US Holland Lop - strong curvature, apple shape - high head mount. . .

Oh I see,the last picture of the bun shows the apple shape rather clearly. Nightshades head isn't that round. i believe I've never seen a proper holland lop in that case

Looks like you have a dwarf lop. from size and picture we only have dwarf lops (which are US holland lops) and dwarf lops (which are US mini lops) confusing huh!!

The fact that not all rabbits have the "ideal" conformation makes it even moreconfusing. :?

I thought the US holland lop is called mini lop in the Uk and the and the US mini lop is what we call dwarf lop. Now I am completely confused:?

Hmmm still not sure about Nightshade. Maybe he is a poor example of a holland lop. I certainly see similarities

Oh good. i thought I was loosing it for a minute:twitch:

Sabine,

It's really hard to tell from the picture or the weight. My hollands come in less than four pounds, with my males usually being lighter than my females. My minis are around 6 pounds each.

I must see if I can get some better pictures of Nightshade. He's my neighbour's rabbit so i don't have access all the time. At the moment he is really huge.
The other day when I went into a pet shop and started wondering whether the lops I was looking at were dwarf or mini the shop assistant tried to convince me they were neither but "standard" lops. As much as saying "haven't go a clue":(

Hmm, if you have the same rabbits as the UK, then there shouldn't be holland lops there at all, or minilops like the USA kind.

You should have minilops and dwarf lops, in the smaller lop breeds.

Minilops are the same as holland lops, give or take a few points here and there. Should weigh about 1.5kg, short, stocky, round apple heads.

Dwarf lops are more like 2.2kg. Similar look, tend to have a slightly longer coat (due to the amount of fuzzy/cashmere lop genes in the dwarf lop).

The dwarf lop has a bit more of a boxy head rather than apple. Sort of shoebox-ish, but not as long as a shoe box.

Ears should be longer than what you would find on a mini.

Here are some links to an excellent breeder here who is also a show judge, and she has many champion bunnies.

Her minilops: http://therabbitshack.tripod.com/id10.html

I still struggle to tell the difference, and I've owned one of her minilops and one of her dwarflops.

Thanks, I just compared the pictures of the mini and dwarf. In some i can clearly see the difference in the shape of the head but then others could be one or the other, I think because of the more shoe-boy head in Nightshade I'd lean towards dwarf lop
