Hi everyone!

I just joined now as I adopted a new bunny from the SPCA for my spayed female girl...she lost her buddy 3 years ago after he *de-sexed* was killed by wondering dogs.

Now both rabbits are housed inside and we're planning to bond them over the next few weeks so hopefully they'll be happy living together.

Penny is an old-ish girl at 7 - 9 years old.
She is very cheeky and I just love her to death.
She is a good girl at being litter trained and has once put the cat in his place.

Harley is an adult, his age is un-known as he was found wondering the streets.
I haven't really known him that long to truly know him but the people at the SPCA said by the sounds of it he might get along with my Pen Pen.
He is very very good at going in his litter tray.

And their cage/my room! *Penny use to be able to free-range my room when she wanted to so once/if they bond they'll be able to free-range as well as use the 4x5 c&c cage

We run Auckland Cavy Care a guinea pig based rescue in Auckland, NZ.

I have 8 guinea pigs of my own, three rats, 12 mice, and a tropical fish tank.

Then as a family we have 7 cats (10 if you count the feral kittens we're taming...5 of our cats are feral ones..) and goldfish.

Thank you both!

By any chance does anyone know what breed/s Penny or Kenny (we've renamed Harley Kenny)is?
It doesn't really matter but would be cool to know!

Also, is it a good sign if at first Penny would attack him through the grids..but now they're happy to eat side by side and he loves to follow her..which she doesn't seem to mind!....They're not in the same cage, there are grids separating them.

The last time we bonded rabbits was 4 or 5 years ago...so I'm a real newbie at this again!

You have some super pretty bunnies! Harley is so interesting! So her blue eyes and the white in her coat could point to a Vienna marked rabbit (the Vienna gene comes from blue eyed white rabbits) and when they are crossed with solid colored rabbits you get rabbits that have Dutch markings. Her color besides the white is called harlequin. I also think this is the color of penny (I can see slight black markings on her hind end and right side of her face).

So also another possibility with Harley could be an actual harlequin Dutch. They are starting to become more popular in the states and are Dutch rabbits with harlequin markings. Blue eyes can randomly pop up in Dutch rabbits so they don't always have to be Vienna marked. I wish there was known history of parents that could let you know for sure. As far as breed for penny I'm not sure there's not real distinguishing characteristics pointing to what breed.

Hi there, your bunnies are SO BEAUTIFUL!! I love the pics, we can see you like them and do your best to give them a nice and cozy home. I wish more people were like you!
I hope you manage to rescue lots of animals, you're doing such a beautiful job!
I'm sure they and your pets are very happy!
:big kiss:

Thanks for the new pics! I don't know much about breeds so I can't help with that.

I do know a little about bonding bunnies, enough to say that I think that it is a good sign that they are eating near each other like that. :)

Thanks again!

Could I just line the bottom of the cage with newspaper instead of fleece?

You can line the bottom of the cage with newspaper, but there's a good chance they'll shred it all and dig it all over the place! :p

They are both such beautiful rabbits. Harley is beautiful, I love blue-eyed dutch and his harlequin markings are very attractive. Unfortunately I don't have any insight into Penny's breed.

Also, welcome :)

Haha...I'm gonna try newspaper as we've currently got 24 guinea pigs in our care and not enough fleece blankets for all the cages!

What easy toys can I make for rabbits?

Also, how much veggies are they meant to get? For the guinea pigs they get half a cup of veggies per pig twice daily...but have read that rabbits only need veggies every couple of days?

We just did a bunny date that lasted around 10 - 20 ish mintues..and Penny was not happy at all. She was grunting through all of it and was just lying down. He pulled out some hair while humping her..I did once had to take him off her as he was humping he face and I've read it could cause damage to him if she bites.
Penny was laying flat down on the ground most of the time...I feel so sorry for my old girl

They did do some grooming on their selves...and Kenny did eat some lettuce and Hay..Penny ate some hay but she wasn't happy.

I really prefer introducing piggies then rabbits! I understand them more...

They're getting along really well!

Penny usually follows Kenny around...I'm thinking about cleaning the cage putting them in it together..They've been having dates for as long as just over an hour with nothing going wrong...is it safe to put them in the cage together?

I haven't had experience myself with bonding buns but I have followed a few peoples blogs that are bonding or have bonded buns and typically they seem to wait until they can be together without any issues for several hours before moving them in together. Bun fights can be serious but you know your buns best. If you can you could read through some of the blogs or read up here on bonding. Good Luck!

Thanks!

Today Kenny has been the first one to groom the other! He is grooming Penny's Forehead.

They've been together for the past 5 hours..so far so good!
