Hi!
Just a quick hello as I could write about my bunnies forever...
I'm a bun mum to 4 rabbits - Jasmine about 5 years old (pet store rescue), Delilah ( about 5 years old and an SPCA foster turned adoptee) and her sons Muffin and Pepper - both about 2 yo. Prior to this group I had Otter ( RIP 2013) and her mate Stampy (RIP 2010) - my first buns. I've had Delilah for about 2 years. Took her in as a foster (my first) and she had 6 kits the same day I went to pick her up. took her on anyway as she had been apprehended as a severe neglect and abuse case along with 9 other bunnies in various states of bad health - some had to be euthanized I was told. Delilah had 5 kits - 4 survived and I kept three. I lost her daughter Smudge last year after she went septic a couple days after a surgical procedure to remove a mass in her gut. Just under a week ago I became aware of a very young and sick dwarf bunny at a local pet store where I shop for dog food. I recognized immediately that the bun was in distress and inquired. Found out it had been in the store for about 4 days and hadn't eaten, drank or pooed in about 24 hours. The young girls were concerned and allowed me to intervene and feed critical care by syringe and water as well. I left the bunny there and came back a few hours later to find him covered in diarrhea but still not eating. I cleaned him up and repeated the feeding. I left him there that night with my number and told them to call me in the morning. They did and the rest in now a new story of what I call rescue and commitment and a little fighter. The follwoing mornign they asked me to come look at him and I was very surprised to see that he was still alive as I was confident he was in statis and likely suffering from some other underlaying condition. His tummy was huge ! The store released him to me without payment and I agreed to be responsible for him. I took him to my vet who told me that he was severely dehydrated, immacaiated and in stasis. He presrcribed subq fluids, 2 antibiotics, a pain med and something for the gas and stasis. She told me we had a 10% chance and i said that was enough. We're on day 6 and I have a very energetic bunny that is nearing the end of some of his meds, eating and drinking voraciously on his own and off the subq. I am still supplementing with the critical care as he is so very thin. We've named him Benjamin and my sister has agreed to adopt him once I'm confident he is well and I am pleased as I will continue to have him in my life and he will live as a true house rabbit - something I can't even offer 100% to my rabbits ( they are indoors but caged until exercise and cuddle time). I know he is a male based on the vet's exam but am not entirely confident of what kind of rabbit he is . He was actually advertised as a female dwarf bunny and at first glance looked like a peachy colored Netherland dwarf who's ears were a bit too long. I had a smokey grey Netherland dwarf the same size and she was full grown. Over the course of the week I have noted that he has grown a tiny bit, although he was only .68 kg last week. His energy is comical - especially today and he loves to rip around and sit on you for cuddles and kisses. My netherland was a real kisser but none of the rest. Yesterday one of his ears flopped over and started hanging and I became worried that it had somehow become injured it, although we have really handled him with incredible care, but today I am wondering if there is some lop in him? I felt the ear up at the skull and it does feel different - almost like it's missing some of its attachment, when I compare it with the other, but again...not sure how this would have occurred. Any ideas? And what is the best way to determine how old this wee guy is? The vet said the teeth but that just suggests he's young - like maybe 7-8 weeks. Anyway - my siste will take him regardless but I would like to get an idea if this is a very young rabbit that will end up at 2-3 kgs or a true dwarf that has done alot of his growing. Thanks everyone!! i'll attach a couple pics but they are from the day I got him and he's already looking different just a week later.
