hi, i am leah and i have no bunnies at the moment because sadly my 2 year old rabbit died in september of an outbreak of myxamatosis, she was loved very much and we all still miss her, she was my first rabbit and i have some really nice memories of her!
now i am looking for a new baby....a 8-12 week old doe, hopefully within the hnext week or so i will have a new baby to care for, she'll be a well loved companion and then later on used a s a breeding bunny!.......so thats a bit about my bunny history, now about me, i am an animal crazy gal and im very independent and love to read, and swim, ooo and horse ride, i live with my mum, little brother and my older sister and our cat alfie and hamster juniour, and a teenage akita called kushai whio we sadly have to sell due to not having the time or space to train her and so she is a very stroppy teenage dog and can get aggressive although she is very good with other dogs and babies and children, i think she just needs showing whos boss, lol, so thats me!

thanks =]

Welcome Leah!

Im very sorry to hear about Talluyllah, RIP :(.

Also, im sure you all ready know, but for your future bunny, be sure to get her vacinated against myxi.

Can I ask why you want to breed?

Hi Leah,

Welcome to the forum.

I'm so sorry you lost your bunny to that nasty illness.

It's good you have joined the forum, hopefully you can make good use of the information here. Before you decide to breed it might be worth asking questions about it in the Rabbitry forum. I have bred some buns and lost two very much loved does in labour, as well as many kits, so it's a really hard decision to make. Also, if you do breed her, she needs to be bred before she is a year old. I hope you find the forum helpful and I look forward to seeing you around.

Take care

Tracy

hi, thankyou every1 for such a nice welcome, and your sympathy about tallullah, although i am not completely new its just i haven't been on in ages and my acount had been deleted so i made a new 1, lol, umm well i went today to have a look @ some bunnies and saw the most cutest lil girl eva she was a dutch and only about 9-10 weeks old, she was so cute!.....we so nearly brought her but the staff were very rude and so that put my mum in a bad mood so now we were going to go to a different petshop but it was closed and so now we have to wait untill next time to go there to have a look!
lol, i wanted to breed because i really love rabbits and would love to have more to look after and they would give me something to do!

lol, so thanks guys!

If you want more, you can always adopt from your local shelter/ rescue center.

Its just not very smart to breed when so many rabbits die everyday, from not being able to find a home.

:?

I'm sorry you had to deal with rude staff but it's a good job you didn't get her in the end if you want to breed. You must never breed from a pet shop rabbit!

It sounds like you need to do a lot of research before you start breeding, starting with where to get rabbits from. You need to go to a registered experienced breeder that has records for all their animals. Otherwise you can easily end up with a litter of babies with serious medical issues. How would you feel if by 8 weeks old they all had serious dental problems and faced expensive dental treatment every 6 weeks or being euthanised - which of courses makes them impossible to find homes for. That's the sort of thing that can happen when you breed from a random pet shop rabbit - you never know what genes they are carrying, it's totally irresponsible.

If you do want to to breed you'll need to buy two rabbits from a good breeder, they'll each need a hutch and run. The new animal welfare laws in the UK mean they'll each need a minimum of 5'x2'x2' hutch plus a run minimum of 5'x4'. You'll also need another spare hutch/run for when the babies need to leave mum.

I'm not sure whether you're aware of the complications that can occur when breeding? Most people don't breed from their 'well loved companions' because pregnancy is high risk and the mother dying isn't uncommon. It's also not uncommon for them to kill the first litter. I hope you've got a strong stomach because you'll need to be prepared to clean up the left overs (the mum's partially eat the kits they kill :( )

Anywhere more info on breeding here: http://www.rabbitrehome.org.uk/care/breedingrabbits.asp

If you really love rabbits and are looking for a challenge how about helping out with rabbit welfare? In the UK each year 33,,000 unwanted rabbits are dumped at rescue centre! There are several near you and they are always looking for volunteers to adopt, foster (temporarily look after), or even volunteer at the rescue centre. That way you get all the good parts and you're helping animals instead of adding to the over population problem.

Hi Leah! (Or would you rather use Lia?)

Your account wasn't deleted, you're still under babybabbit.

Sorry about Tallullah. :( What happened with her babies? And the babies daddy?

Let me know if you want to keep you Leah account or go back to BabyBabbit.

THanks!

Welcome!

I am sorry you lost your bun, Myxi is a horrible disease.:( Vaccinations are not expensive and should be given every six months if you are in a high risk area. Rabbits also need to be vaccinated against VHD.

I agree with everything Tamsin said, breeding is an enourmous responsibility. If you want to get more involved with rabbits why not see if a local resue or shelter wants any help? :)
