Hi, you guys could call me Oki and I adopted 2 beautiful rabbits last Sunday at the local animal shelter. The pure black one is Lumi (snow in Finnish) and the tan/white on is Nilla.

Nilla was a confiscate and about an year old. He was at the shelter for 3 months. Lumi was a stray who left her litter of 3 month olds when I adopted her. She's about a year and 2 months and was there for 2 months. Both had little to no human interaction before my adoption but they're slowly but surely warming up to me. They're already half-way litter box trained.

Both of them were presumed female when I adopted them. Both the paperworks all say female. Come to find out, Nilla is actually a male. And he's trying to (or already succeeded in) impregnating Lumi. I'm getting Nilla neutered asap and Lumi will soon follow but I may end up with a litter of baby bunnies in a month. I feel really bad because of Lumi just finishing up weaning her last litter and this situation wasn't planned at all. I know nothing of breeding rabbits and I promised her that this would be her last litter. Any advice and ideas on how to prepare for and take care of said bunnylettes would be great.

Welcome to RO, Oki!

Sounds like your bunnies will have a great life with you. I know nothing about breeding bunnies, but lots of folks here at RO do. Check around and read the threads, you're bound to find some good advice.

Oh, and I am certain that if you post questions there will be an experienced bunny person along to help you through this experience.

Good luck! Looking forward to getting to know you better.

Hi! Welcome to the forum! Your Nilla looks to be mainly dutch (I have a dutch boy :)) They are both absolutely adorable.

And don't worry about not knowing anything about breeding, we have lots of breeders and uber knowledgeable people here to help you out :)

Welcome to the forum :biggrin2:!

It would be smart to get Lumi in ASAP for an emergency spay, that way she doesn't have to go through the trouble of having a back litter AND bringing more bunnies into the world. There are so many in shelters already.

Most people won't do an e-spay because they beleive it to be abortion, but you need to do what is going to be best for the mother.

I second the 'emergency spay' idea. There's just so many things that could happen, and so many problems to deal with :?

That aside.....

Welcome to RO! :D Your bunnies are definitely cute, and I'm sure you'll have a great time here, too.

Hi I just wanted to say hello,:biggrin2:

I know nothing of breeding, I have only one bun named BK, he is now a year old.
But I am interested to follow your story... let us know what decision you make,
hope Lumi will be okay.

Hopefully she is not pregnant and your worries will be over :)
RO is a super place to get the help you need!!

Welcome Oki!

Your two are adorable! I love them, and their names. :D

Good luck with whatever you decide to do in regards to the pregnancy, I hope it goes well. :)I do think that is a bit strange and irresponsible for a shelter to allow an unaltered male and female to be together. :?

I hope you enjoy the forum!

Welcome to RO :)

I hope everything works out for your girl. They seem to have a really fun time there: plenty of space to roam. Some shelters really need to be educated better about rabbits... :?

Thank you everyone :)

Michaela, the animal shelter were basically willing to break all the rules to let me take them. At first they didn't want me adopting 2 females from different cages, then they didn't want me to seperate the litter from the mother, both which I would've understood to but they changed their minds because basically, they felt if I didn't take them that day, no one would've ever taken them. Kind of sad that because of their desperation, both Lumi and I are between a rock and a hard place but we'll figure something out.

Emergency spay? I didn't realize those things were possible. Up to how far into the pregnancy can you do this? Like I've stated before, I'm not even sure if she's pregnant yet. And if she is, I'm not sure I'd want to "get rid of" her babies in that way, but I'm always opened to any advice you could all give me. If I do end up letting her have the litter, I will be neutering them before finding homes for them so no one else will be in my position.

Hey Oki! Welcome :)

You're bunnies are gorgeous! I love their names! Wow! What a situation to be in .

Maybe create a thread with questions about how far into the pregnancy you can spay a doe? I personally don't have any experience with this, but I'm sure other members do and they'd be more than happy to help! Might also be good to ask a few questions about care for a doe who could possibly be having back to back litters, any tips to see if she is pregnant etc in the Rabbitry.

There's also a thread in the rabbitry that is very excellent and will take you through what you need to know about the momma and kits. I definitely recommend reading it!

Welcome, and good luck! Feel free to ask any questions/concerns you might have, and we will be more than happy to help :).

I came over to this thread to see pictures of your rabbits.

They are adorable and look so happy! I hope everything works out. That is pretty bad that the rescue wasn't even able to sex them properly.
