I have a California who had babies, last night, this morning?????? I did not know she was pregnant, so no nest ox and she seems to have thrown them out of the cage? My father in law is there now, I am at work? I told hime to put a nest box in with hay, but she didn't pull fur. It seems that 3 out of 5 are still alive.

Any advise??????

I am not a breeder so don't have first hand experience with this, however, it is good that he made a nestbox for the babies. He should watch the interaction between mom and babies to make sure that she is not rejecting them . The mom should be able to leave the box as she will only nurse twice a day. is their a bigger area than the cage where you could place them? Also make sure the babies are warm enough. If she is a first-time mom she may have difficulty with the first litter .

Someone here with more knowledge will fill you in with specifics later. :)

You can pull fur from your bun yourself to give the babies a warm nest and it might give her the right idea and she might pull some fur herself!

Make sure you check on them and make sure she is feeding them - if they have been fed recently they will have "ping pong" bellies!

How are they at the moment?

If there are any dead kits make sure your remove them becuase the mum might kill them all. But try not to touch the life ones or make much noise to startle them becuase she might eat them or abandon them.

Hope that helped a little bit.

Keep an eye out in case she doesn't want to take them! if you think they arent being fed then you can try gently holding the doe or giving her something to eat and putting the babies under her to nurse. But like Becca said if they have ping pong bellies then they should be doing fine :)

I hope they are ok keep us updated :)
