Good afternoon fellow rabbit parents,

A few months ago, we acquired this little girl from one of my husbands' colleagues. We re-named her Penny and took her to the vet recently. The vet could not identify the breed of rabbit she is, he said that she is a "common" rabbit and that she is very healthy. A little background on her might help deduce which breed she is:

We live in Djibouti, Africa. Her previous owner had the sneaking suspicion that she was originally bred to be slaughtered, as she lived outside by the folks he adopted her from. Also, rabbit is a delicacy and reserved only for the wealthy in this country.

I am just trying to figure out which breed she is to anticipate any possible health concerns later in life.

Would you be able to provide additional photos from other angles? I think the current angle, in combination with her fur pattern, is making her look very stout, kangaroo-ish to me, haha. Because of the longer snout/nose area, I think it's safe to rule out Netherland Dwarf or Lops; however, I am not experienced with breed identification per say -- that's just based on my experience.

Health concerns by breed are a good thing to keep in mind, but in general, I'm unsure of any major health concerns that come breed-specifically. Lops (ears flopped down) may have ear infections more often because it's less easy to check their ears and their positioning, and lops and dwarves (smooshed faces) tend to have more teeth issues because of their bone structure. Outside those, I am unsure of others, but I don't think any particular breed has something that needs preparation at an early age. Constant vigilance and practice in good quality rabbit care and love are the best preventatives!
