Hello! My name is Chelsea, I'm nineteen and I'm a complete newbie to rabbit-owning, though I do own dwarf hamsters and guinea pigs and have owned sugar gliders, rats, ferrets, and rats. For my birthday yesterday I was gifted with a pair of Harlequin dwarfs- about six and a half weeks old- from our local petstore, and I adore them. I figured it'd be good to join something like this in case questions pop up, and they definitely have. This place looks pretty neat :)

Once I get home from work, I'll be looking into all of the information topics, but for now, I'm off to ask questions in the nutrition and behavior section~!

Happy Birthday and Welcome to the Forum! :welcome1

This is a great place for information to get for your bunnies. Do you knowthe sexof yourtwo rabbits?

Thank you! I'm really eighteen still but since nineteen is so close we went ahead and got my birthday bunnies early :3

But no, I don't know the sexes yet. I'm hoping the vet can sex them this early, but I don't know if there's an eight/ten/twelve week cutoff for sexing to be accurate.

Let me welcome you to Rabbits Online, my name is Dave and I am a moderator on the forum. So if I can be of any help please let me know. This is a terrific website for rabbits and their slaves, not only is it very active but also friendly. I am so glad you’re here and I know you will enjoy it.

If you everhave a sick bunny, please post in The Infirmary and include your rabbit's age, breed and health history as well diet and output details leading up to the problem.

I have listed some links I thought you might find interesting:

*For reference the Library section

*To brag or tell everyone about the antics of your bunny or just to talk about your day here is where to start a Bunny Blog, you can also look back at it later and remember when you had a life before your bunny.

*Now all the bunny’s like talk to each other when we mere slaves aren’t around in the Bunny Chat is the spot to be.

*Rabbits Online also has regional forums , this a good way to find a vet in your area that has experience with rabbits and to find out from other nearby of good sources of rabbit supplies.

The Let Your Hare Down section is for anything non-bunny related.

Here is a link tothat will help you and your bunny to connect, How To Bond With Your Bunny.

Now every forum has rules and ours can be found with this link Rabbits Online Forum Rules. This gives guidelines on what is acceptable, what is not and how we hope everyone will treat each other.

Everyone on this forum loves to see pictures of each other’s bunnies. So if you would like to post a picture this link will help you do that, Upload Photo's to Photo Gallery. Then in the post, you click on the "G" in the tool bar to insert your photo.

I am glad you have joined rabbits online and I look forward to seeing you around.

Thanks for all of the hellos (and links!), everyone! I'm currently at my mom's with my camera, so I do have some pictures, but my camera cord is at my dad's...I'll have them up tomorrow! 8D

They're the funniest things XD I love the way they pop up on their hind legs and peel over things. It's absolutely adorable. Only current problem is that they're chewing on everything but the toys/chews I gave them (apple wood chews, "loofah" chews, and a toilet paper roll) and they're going for the carpet instead. Oh, and they like to pee on the floor- well, Toby seems to get the hang of jumping back in the cage to do his wet business, but Bally doesn't care XD

I wrote a huge "PLEASE HELP ME" post in the nutrition/behavior section, if anyone's available/interested. ^^;

Oh- would anyone recommend an outdoor hutch, at all?

Sorry for the double-post...I guess I waited too long.

Is "alfafa orchard grass" or "grass hay mix" something good to feed my bunnies? There's a craiglist listing for it in my city; I guess it's for the 2010 crop in 4 x 4 rolls for 35$ and 25$, respectively.

Also, I noticed a "timothy hay wanted" listing for Pittsboro, IN...that wasn't someone from here, was it? xD

Hey!
Welcome to the forum!

I am also brand new here, I recently got two lionhead babies :)
They're adorable.

Thats awesome they were a gift, I just decided to get mine ;) lol
I am seventeen, so I suppose we're kind of close in age.

I'm not BRAND new to bunnies, I had some hollandlops when was about eleven.
But I have a LOT to learn too :)
I already have a ton :)

So welcome again! You're learn a lot, there are some great people on here who know a ton about bunnies :)

Both of those hays sound good. Sometimes older bunnies won't tolerate alfalfa hay as well as younger ones, so you may have to switch off the alfalfa/orchard mix in a year. Alfalfa is considered a legume hay, and the other type of hay would be a grass hay. Usually we say that young bunnies can have both, and adults should just have grass hay with legume hay only as a treat because it contains more protein. But any hay that is sold for horses is usually a good hay for bunnies.

Thanks!

I wish they were ready for bed- last night they played a bunch and then hopped back into their cage on their own and snuggled up on top of the wooden house. Tonight they're still running around and it's getting kinda late. XD

Toby is getting a bit bite-y...he'll sniff my fingers and then nibble. Anything I can do to deter it? Or is the nibbling bunny affection? xD

They are so adorable! Toby, though, I think is a mini rex mix, not a harlequin. I would caution you to double check their sexes because a lot of accidents can happen and bunnies start to mature around 2-3 months of age, but really shouldn't have babies at that age. There are some good threads in the Rabbitry section about how to tell.

Mini rex mix? I can definitely believe that, because the breeder they came from had 20+ kits and gave some to each Speck's in the area, and we went to the other one close to us...and there were two there that looked almost exactly like the harlequin color, and two more that were a tannish color that had the rex coat, along with another that looked almost identical.

I'll post this in my breeds/color thread as well, but- if Bally has longer and sort of thicker fur on his back (not at all like Toby's short fur), could he be part lionhead? One of the others that was with them in the cage at our Speck's was ridiculously fluffy.

And I'll go find those threads and check- called the exotic vet today and the tech there said we can either bring them in now to be sexed or wait until they're about three months. What do you (or anyone who gets to this) recommend?

I can't be sure--babies seem to shed their coat and get an adult coat that they stick with for life, at least as far as I know it. Bally could also be part angora, or Jersey wooly, or one of the other furry breeds.

I think 3 months should be fine--they shouldn't have reached maturity yet, so they won't be able to have a litter. You definitely want to separate them as soon as they reach maturity, whether they're the same gender or opposite. Unaltered bunnies often will fight, no matter how well they got along as babies. Once they've been fixed, they can be put back together.
