Greetings! Unfortunately I made my introduction in the infirmary section, where I was trying to rescue a little one who didn't make it. But I figured I might as well introduce myself in case I have more questions.
My name is Courtney. I live near Niagara Falls in New York. My husband and I love animals. We have two very spoiled bulldogs, two fish, and two hamsters. I got involved with a local small animal rescue when I was looking for a hamster on Craigslist and found the advertiser had over 40 hamsters in her house! She didn't know how to sex hamsters and the situation was out of control. I offered to help her home them and found a small animal rescue, Life Long Tails, in Buffalo NY to help. Since then I've been giving small donations, and I adopted two of the hamsters. I saw on their blog that they were going to come into possession of 7 rabbits from an SPCA rescue of about 160 angoras from a breeding operation in Canada. They were looking for fosters. I never had a pet rabbit before.
Oh, my dear sweet husband. I asked "hey, can I foster a rabbit?" Sure, he said.
The rescue emailed me and said that they housed three of the females together, and they seem to get along very well, so would I mind taking two more? Dear sweet husband said yes.
Then, the day I was to pick them up, the rescue emailed me that one of my females had a litter of 6 that morning! Would I be willing to take those? I declined, because I felt like I was already pushing my luck with my husband! :biggrin2: But on the car ride there, he said "We're taking three, right?" I answered, no, two, because one had babies. And bless his heart, he said if I wanted to raise the babies I could, and he knew me well enough to know I'd love them.
So now I had three female rabbits, and six kits!
Now I've had them for about 9 days, and they're great. The littlest baby didn't make it, against our best efforts. But the rest are growing at an astronomical rate!
VERY messy though. I think no one ever litter trained them. The room is a mess. ugh. I clean their cages once, maybe twice every day.
OK, enough stories. Here are pictures.
Momma rabbit
Baby rabbit. With the "dimple" I think he looks like Robert DeNiro.
The litter
One of the other females.
The third female. Love, love the lop ears. She looks like a perfect little bunny puppet. But she is a jerk. She spends all her time humping the other female, and she doesn't like to be touched by humans. Would appreciate any tips anyone has to better socialize her.
Eyes starting to open on one of the kits.
