Hi, I grew up around rabbits. At the wonderful age of 3, I wandered up to a neighbors house, which eventually struck up a lifelong friendship. The neighbor had alot of animals. She had a barn full of mini rex's that she would breed and show. I learned alot growing up. Eventually, I moved away, had 3 kids and now am in a situation that I am doing quite well in but I would love to be able to ask questions. Maybe I am missing something.

I do apologize, I rescued a rabbit about a month ago. I thought I was just going to go buy a pet for my kids and teach them how to care for her, like I had as a child. When I got there, the cage was just horrible and I found a malnourished rabbit. She just felt frail and you could count her ribs. When I picked her up there, she was a little skittish but very sweet. I quickly paid the $30 the lady wanted and took the rabbit. I just knew I could help her.

We named her Sarina, after about a week I occasionally called her "Sarina the Sassy". She is about5 months old. I know that she is a dawrf rabbit. But not exactly what breed she is. We had a rough 3 weeks, where I did not know if I wsa going to be able to keep her, she developed aggression in her cage, attacking anyone who came near. I actually had doubts on if I was the right person to care for her, if I had enough experience and if it was safe for her or the kids.

Patience and persistence has been the key! She is no longer in her rabbit cage. She is in a very large bird cage (with white wire). We are building hera rabbit hutch (almost done). Sarina calmed down quite a bit in the white wire cage compared to the silver of the rabbit cage. Do not understand it, but it seems to be a factor. She is litter box trained. Her agression is down, her sweetness and how smart she truley is is coming through. She is an indoor rabbit, very occasional outdoor (when I take her)...we gave her a collar and a bell that she wears while hopping around the house but not in the cage just so we have a beeter idea of what she is doing. But she is interacting with the kids. Also she walks on a leash (not for long about 10 mins..outside) she follows my sneakers..both inside and out they seem to be safety to her (? not sure on that). Her diet and apperance has improved, she has put on some muscle.. can't count her ribs or bones like I could when I picked her up. I have her on a diet of timothy hay, pellets (crude protein 17%), supplement (rabbit veggie, fruit, nut, mineral, vitamin) and plently of water. I have also been giving her a small peice of green pepper once a week and a small peice of pineapple once a week (not on the same day). She nibbles on the pellets and supplement; eats lots of hay and drinks plenty of water.

Ok, sorry for the long intro. Thank you for listening!

:welcome1to the forum! This is a great site with friendly people and lots of bunny help available. She might have been going through the bunny equivalent of the "teenage" years earlier. Glad she has calmed down for you.

I look forward to seeing some pictures of Sarina.

Congratulations on becoming a bunny mom! Glad to have you here on RO. This is a great site to get advice, share stories, and make some wonderful friends.

Looking forward to seeing some photos of your special girl really soon

Hi and Welcome! I just rescued a bun about a month ago and he (Baxter!) follows my shoes as well (I mustbe really careful when I first walk into the room as he likes to run circles around my feet - and this is apparently very common bunny behaivor!).. If you read under the various sites here such as Bunny 101, etc.. you'll get alot of your questions answered as to behavior, food, etc..

Alsoit can help if youadd where you and your bunny live as you may find other members of this site are near you and may come in handy in the future (forexample - one told me where all the great feed stores are around me in Los Angeles; I lived here 20 years and have never seen one).

Enjoy your new little one, and post photos when you can!

:hello :bunnydance:

M! SO very glad you joined this forum. Sarina has already come a long way under your care. Lots of very "bunny savy" people around here to help you out!

If I could just make a suggestion, we don't usually recommend putting a collar on a bunny. Their necks are so fragile and can break very easily. You should try a small animal harness. It goes over her shoulders and around her belly. Much safer for a rabbit. You can attach the bell to the harness.

Hi and thanks for sharing your story! This is a great site for advice on anything rabbit. If you are concerned about her diet, you can post a detailed listing in the nutrition and behavior section and get some input from other members. Welsome from one sassy-bunny owner to another!;)

Hi there and welcome! Bless you for saving this little one and putting up with her mood swings. Some bunnies who have a very rough start in life unfortunately tend to take it out on us. But sometimes they surpise you and settle down quite nicely.

Have you considered having her spayed? That really helps with aggression and also prevents uterine cancer (which is very common in unspayed bunnies). Also, I know you said you were building a cage for her, have you seen the NIC condos and pens a lot of us on the forum have? They are so easy to build and very very cheap. Theres some great examples here:

Again, welcome to you and your new bunny. I cant wait to see some pictures of the little darling!
