Hello,

My name is Peter. I am in the NYC area and looking to adopt a bunny.... I'm just looking to learn as much as possible here about their care, diet, behavior, etc. My family has a cat, a dog, 6 tortoises, a turtle, and two fish. However, they all live at my parents'house. I live in the city for school and work. With tortoises, sometimes certain species are recommended for beginners because they are hardier among other reasons...Does that happen with breeds of rabbits or are they similar? what about their temperaments? Of course it varies among individuals but are there general traits for breeds? Please, inform me, I want to adopt one (if not more!) soon!!!

Welcome to the forum.

Maybe we can start off by finding out some things about how you will care for the rabbit so people can better help you choose a species.
Personalities can range from species to species but usually every bunny is unique in their own little way, but size can play a few rolls.

How often are you home?
How much time a day do you have to spend with a rabbit?
How often will the rabbit be allowed free time?
How large is your space or the space the rabbit will be allowed to run about in?
How big of a cage do you have room for/are willing to get?
Are there other people living in your place? if so how do they feel about rabbits?
What size range of bunny are you looking for?

my 2 brats are brother and sister, yet have such different personalities.

thanks for your reply.

I live alone in a studio apartment. I go to school two days a week (11am-9pm and 11am-530pm) and work three days (8am-5pm) but get up early every morning and am home most nights. During the mornings and evenings the rabbit would be able to have free time out in a 100 sq ft area indoors in my apartment.

I could probably accommodate a cage that is somewhere up to around the size of 5'X 2' or so.

I think I'd rather a larger bunny...do larger ones tend to be more energetic and need more room or are there large breeds that are generally less active?

Hi and welcome to RO!

I've found that the smaller dwarf buns are generally less active and the larger buns are more of the couch potatoes but there is obviously great variation among individuals within each breed. If you're looking to adopt from a shelter or rescue, they can generally tell you about the personalities of the rabbits they have which can help you make your decision.
