Hello ,

:) I just got a new zealand white rabbit and i bought it the 22/03/09:D and i'm just thinking if i can bring him to the vet and vaccinate him against Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) and for a health check .

Please Do i have to bring him to the vet???:?:? . Help me

Do they vaccinate and checkrabbits in petshops before we buy them ???

Thank u !

Yes, you should take your bun to a vet.

If he was vaccinated before you got him then he would come with a vaccination card that would show the details of the vaccines and when they were done and who by.

He will need his myxo every 6 months and his VHD every year.

The rabbit will need a full health check before they vaccinate him because they shouldn't vaccinate an ill rabbit.

Not sure if you know, but the myxo vaccine should be given partly in the skin layer so it might be given in the ear vein, or it might be pulled out slightly at the end of the injection. If your vet does not do this then it has not been done properly.

The myxo vacc will be done first and then he will need to go back two weeks later for the VHD because they should not both be given at the same time.

Do you have a good rabbit savvy vet?

hi! i took my buns to their rabbit savvy vet this morning for their myxo. they were each given a full examination - teeth - they hate this as he looks into their mouths thru a small tube, eyes, ears, coat, limbs, genitals. he asked about their diet and how they were coping in this heat. he also asked if i had any concerns or questions. he didnt weigh them this time as he had done both of them following a post neuter visit in february.(i was bonding them so took the two of them everywhere)

we had a 9am appointment due to the heat - i take food - pellets and a carrot, plus water. we go straight there and back to minimise stress and heat.

good luck:biggrin2:
