what hay do you feed your rabbits and why

Do you grow your own or if not where do you purchase it?

I have been buying timothy hay in bags but read it is high in protein and they go thru it fast and it gets expensive. I am trying to figure out the best hay to feed and where I should look to buy it in bulk

The timothy hay is fine for them. Much lower in protein than alfalfa. Orchard grass is fine for them as well.

Edited to add: I get my hay from a farmer that supplies local horse farms. A 45 lb.bale costs me about $7-$8. Keep it dry and dust free and it'll keep for a while. Much better than the stuff you buy in plastic bags from the pet stores.

I use timothy that I buy from a farmer that lives up the road from me. I used to buy it in bags when I just had pets. When I first priced it in bulk, the farmer apologized for me because he thought the current going price was too steep. I, however, laughed...the price for his bale was less than I was paying for a little bag! And, he even drops it off in my barn for me...can't beat that!

I use timothy or orchard grass depending which looks better at the feed store when I go. Our NZ is not a big hay eater and she loves the orchard we've gotten the last 2 bales so that's what they have now.

Each of my rabbits get a large handful of timothy hay daily. They get hay because it encourages good digestive health. Also, my rabbits only get fed a small amount of pellets, once a day, to keep in condition without going overweight. Hay is a good "filler" as it does not add weight, just something to snack on throughout the day.

No, I don't grow my own. I used to buy it by the bale online, but wih shipping, it was well over $25/bale...insane! Especially with so many mouths to feed now, I've searched long and hard and finally found good timothy hay locally. Costing between free and $4/bale depending on where I get it. *cough* Why was I trying to justify $25/bale?

Well I use timothy or orchard grass for my rabbit/chinchillas. I got orchard grass when I picked up our rabbit because I was out of hay and all they had at the petstore was kaytee alfalfa and the oxbow orchard grass (they were out of timothy hay:_( ).

I just buy it from the petstore it's usually fresh bags everytime I go in there and they are always good if I go in and say my chinchillas say this hay isn't fresh enough to eat they refund my money, or replace the hay.

I use coastal hay because my only choices are Alfalfa and coastal. I pay anywhere from $7 for a bale to $15...depending upon the time of year, etc.

When the flemish giant breeder I visited saw the hay in the van he was impressed with how good it was and the price we paid...he can't get good hay locally.

So whenever we go to a show he might be at - I'm gonna bring him some hay - a bale if I can fit it and the buns....he was really nice and got me great stock for a great price..its the least I can do in return.
