Hey everyone!

So I will be having 2 of my rabbits outside this winter and one in the garage. They have a box in their hutch to go into when it gets really cold and in the box I have it stuffed with bedding and hay. My uncle was just telling me that I should use straw instead of hay for bedding. Is this true? Is there a big difference in using hay and straw?

It gets pretty cold here at night and I think straw provides more protection... Is this true? Or am I fine just using hay?

Thanks everyone! :)

Straw has a hollow shaft which hold air and can help insulate better than hay. So straw is better as a bedding that hay. Straw is not good for eating, so you still need to provide hay.

straw is better for bedding for the above reason, it insulates, but it's not good for litter, it smells terrible when peed on. As a rule, rabbits won't pee in their burrows, though, so if you have it stuffed into a covered box with holes in it, it should remain pretty clean and dry. :)
