Today, I decided it was time to see if Harvey would like his harness. I took Harvey out, and while feeding him a bit of a carrot (as a treat) put the harness on. Since, he was getting a treat for the first time in while, he did not budge a muscle. I let him hop around a bit inside, and he was fine, so outside we went.

Harvey just hopped a bit, but after a few minutes was doing binkies, and had the zoomies! He was definately enjoying himself.

Now on to my question. I didn't let Harvey eat except for a few nibbles of grass, which I know are fine for him. I tried to Google poisonous plants, but I could only find names, which mean nothing to me. Does anyone know a list with common names/maybe some pictures? I live in New England, by the woods to give an idea of what plants I may be near.

Also, Harvey ate a whole leaf before I could stop him. It was a dry crumpled up old leaf. Most likely from a Maple or Oak tree. Is that okay for him to eat?

Hi Math, there's a list of toxic plants, with pictures, on the Medirabbit website. This page http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Food/Food_main.htm has a link to it. It's near the bottom, "Plants toxic to rabbits, by Camilla Bergstrøm".

It's a start at least, though it has mainly houseplants and garden plants.

Another list is this one, http://www.mnhouserabbit.org/care/toxic.html
More extensive, but no pictures. You'd have to find the pictures yourself.

Another very good resource is http://plants.usda.gov/
You can look up what plants grow in your state, and their image gallery has pictures of thousands of plants.
It's a bit of work to extract information though, it's not an easy list with pictures besides the plants.

http://www.uvm.edu/pss/ppp/neglist.html has links to various resources and info about plants in the North East.
One section has links to poisonous plants.

Another very interesting site is this one: http://chppm-www.apgea.army.mil/ento/PLANT.HTM the Poisonous and Toxic Plant Guide from the U.S. Army, by category or name.

The problem with most databeases online though, is that you really need to know the name of the plant you're looking for, then it's fairly easy to find a picture.

For your purpose, a Field Guide in book form would be best, like the ones from the National Audubon Society, or others.
They have color plates with pictures of the plants found in various regions of the country.

As to the dried leaf, I wouldn't worry about it. Ours are (were) always nibbling on them outside. It is my understanding that they are harmless when dried.

This is our Library link http://www.rabbitsonline.net/view_topic.php?id=27897&forum_id=10

Also remember about thingslike pesticides and any sort of chemicals. I believe over there you also have parasites that can be on the grass and such and work their way inside and cause problems (like warbles- which are bot flies?), so I personally would be warey of letting him eat anything.

The library gives lots of links, but not quite what Math asked for. he asked for a site with pictures, not just a list.
The only one is the Medirabbit list, but as I said, that's not too much help if he's looking for New England specific plants.

Botflies don't live on plants, they lay their eggs in damp fur and on damp skin. So aslong as he doesn't have his rabbit go out foraging herself in damp grass, I wouldn't worry about that too much :p

Yes, there are parasites outside, but theose are everywhere. You don't think the farmer washes all his hay before drying and bagging it, do you?

It's much easyer for Math to wash whatever he picks outside, provided he can find a book to tell him what it is he picks :)

I was just trying to make him aware, sorry. We did used to have an excellent link in the Library with pictures, and I found it on that link.

Sorry.

Thanks for the info, I looked at the links, but they were still a bit hard for me to decipher. I'm not sure if it was my computer or not but that pictures were blurry to me. Some of the plants seem so similar...

I may try to find an in depth guide at my library, or even easier keep Harvey in the areas with just plain grass/cement. Thanks for the replies though!
