My husband found a baby cottontail rabbit at an abandond home a few months ago. He brought it home and we had her on formula a couple of days. Happy to report, she is the first tiny baby rabbit I was able to save!

We have two other indoor rabbits whom she gets along with pretty well. She is now about 8-9 inches long and untill a couple of days ago had a beautiful tail.

She was in the office running around, doing happy leaps, a few minutes latter she was hiding. We started looking for her and at first only found her tail under a rolling file cart!!!! We found her a few minutes later in one of her favorite spots. The fur, skim and fat was one separate piece, and her poor little back area was a red, moist stick. The tail had somehow ripped right at the base of her bum.

She is understandably more skiddish now, but she seems fine in all other respects. We are wondering if there is any chance for it to grow back. I really don't know if there are any hair follicles left.

I must say i feel so sorry for this bunny. Are you asking if the skin will regrow over the bone? I think you should really take this rabbit to a vet or a wildlife center if you cant take care of it. There is a chance of infection and the tail needs to be taken care of properly.

Next time make sure to quarentine any new rabbit from yours as you have no idea what bugs wild bunnies can have and most people say to leave wild bunnies in their habbitat as you also do not know their situation. Goodluck to the little bunny

I dont want to alarm you, but if the bunny was five inches or longer when you caught her, She would have done fine in the wild. However, whats done is done and I hope she gets well. Good luck, that tail sounds awful it must have been a bad shock for you. :(

Rabbits in the wild do not need rescuing. This is a terrible consequence for her :( I feel like since you thought you were rescuing her you should care enough to take her to the vet immediately, instead of posting on this website.
