We were not going to go trick or treating this year simply because about money quite frank....and it rained today and never made it to the farm...

However...

Someone, whenI asked what they were doing for the day mentioned because of the H1N1 they werent going out...and a lot of people they knew were doing the same..

It was not something I had considered or thought about really, but now I am kinda glad money was too tight to T & T....

Lina and I will be eating her favorite dinner and we will watch a movie for halloween...it will be the first time she has ever seen 'Legend' (tom cruise pre nose job..lol)

I hope it is not too scary for her.....

I hope everyone is staying safe, warm....and having a nice holiday in whatever ways we all find fits us best...

The kids are at far more risk of contracting H1N1 at school than being outdoors trick-or-treating. Right now H1N1 is rather prevalent in our community : (

I think my son had a mild case. One of our renters was rather ill with H1N1, and her niece who had it was hospitalized. Many of the kids at our local school have had it, although just one was hospitalized. My lab partner had it and missed 2 weeks of school : (

My son is out trick-or-treating now :devil

Tom Cruise in a loincloth for a whole movie does have its advantages. It is a good movie anyway.

I am not doing anything special for Halloween. I have considered just giving out rocks to the few kids who would come. Then everyone can fee like Charlie Brown.

My 18y/o is DJing at a Halloween Wedding Reception...EVERYONE in costume at the reception (wedding was a formal affair last night I guess)...17y/o is out with his grandparents and 15y/o has declared that trick or treating is for "little kids". ( I so want to remind him that he went last year). So I guess I sit here and wait for the 2 or 3 we get each year and that leaves me with about 25 snack bags of doritos for me after 8pm :)

We had no trick or treaters come here...
NC seems weird for that...like it is all arranged in little groups and pockets where the kids can go...
STRANGE...

I saw on the news that instead of people letting kids put their germy hands all over different candy in the bag just to get the peice they want, the person is going to hand them a piece. That way only one hand is touching the candy instead of several.

I think thats a good idea. And I will probably do that if any trick or treaters come to my dad's house and I open the door.

I went to Keeneland racetrack- not getting home until after dark and for some odd reason, even though we live in a housing development like area, no t or t's at all. I haven't dressed up since i was 9 years old(not even for school/work) NY was terrible about distrust. one lady in a trailer park we used to live in when i was a kid, put pins in the candy so it was ruined for the trailer park after that. *sigh* some people. . .

Yeah I recall all my T & T years in NY...my mom would not let us eat any fruit, opened candy etc...the pins, and other stuff people do...horrible..

When I was a kid, I always went T or T with my cousin. We weren't supposed to eat anything before we got home, so our parents could inspect it. My mom somehow "inspected" everything by watching me from across the room when cousin and I were sorting and trading. I did toss anything opened. But sometimes we'd get popcorn balls, and we'd eat them before we got home, otherwise our moms would throw them away. LOL!
We were always sent out by ourselves, sometimes my cousin's stepdad would walk us to the end of the block. Cousin is 5 yrs older than me, so we started going out without adults when I was 5, and he was 10.

On the H1N1....I have heard that the virus can live on surfaces for several hours, and you can catch it from someone from up to 10 ft. away. Yet another reason I didn't give out candy this year, I don't want to open my door to a bunch of possibly-infectious kids and parents.

The primary transmission is aerosol/droplet. Surfaces don't appear to be a major route of transmission. I was surprised at how little we could culture off a dry surface (such as a door knob) in microbiology.

Wearing masks are of little use because they quickly get moist from respiration and the tiny viruses easily pass through.

My teen nephew also had a recent bad case of H1N1.

I know that surfaces aren't a major route of transmission, but it is possible. At least that's what I've been told by the news and CDC. (Don't let anyone else use your computer, phone, etc.) I think if a kid sneezes in his hand, then reaches into a bucket of candy, the next kid reaches in and then touches his face, there you go.

My husband's family reunion was a couple weekends ago. I didn't want to go, and I got even more miserable when people were letting the five little kids stick their hands into all the bowls of pretzels, etc. that were around. Unsanitary and gross.

I have asthma, so I'm in one of the "high risk" groups, and I'm trying to avoid any unnecessary circumstances where I could get the flu. That vaccine needs to be available soon.

iv'e gotten a flu vac a couple times-before the h1n1 came around and they were free shots (through work) so i got them, but i finally quit because i couldn't see the point, i was young and healthy and not prone to the flu, i've had it once in my life, back when i was in 3rd grade. but the H1N1 does bother me a little bit, especially when i think about going to a rabbit show . . .

We have a pretty legendary adult Halloween party here in Madison (previously had some riots, etc) and I saw a couple of people dressed as H1N1 (usually a partner costume, one was H1 and one was N1). We had a huge outbreak of the virus in dorms earlier in the year--almost decimated our football team for one weekend game, but I think I've managed to stay healthy. We were supposed to get vaccines here but they only sent our school 1/10 of the number of vaccines they asked for, so I don't know if/when I'll be able to get one. Luckily, as a grad student lab slave, I mostly stay out of the way of the germy undergrads. :D

I know Cornell got their shipment of H1N1 vaccines for health care workers a while ago, but they've only been able to distribute the seasonal vaccine to students so far. We had a pretty nasty outbreak, but not bad enough to cancel classes and we also had one student pass away from related complications.
