Hi, everyone!

I'm Jaime. I'm 20 years old, female, living in the US. I'm currently a student working on my BS in Biology, hoping to become a Zoologist one day! I absolutely love animals. I have 8 currently: 3 dogs, 2 rats, 1 parrot, 1 Bearded Dragon, and of course 1 rabbit!

My rabbit's name is Karen, but he's male. :nod I know, I know... I will admit that I didn't do as much research on rabbits as I should have before acquiring him. Typically I require myself to do at least a few months of research before getting any type of animal, more so if it's a difficult or exotic pet to own. For instance, before getting my parrot, I did about 1.5-2 years of research. Lol. I think it's very important to do lots of research on any pet you are bringing into your household because I strongly believe that an animal is for LIFE, not just for now.

Anywho, Karen was a birthday present to me from my partner. I was actually in the process of my research on rabbits when I happened to go to a local pet store for crickets for my lizard... Again, I know, I know... pet stores = BAD. I work in animal rescue avidly and know this. But there was Karen... A humongous bunny thrown in with all the baby bunnies. I couldn't help myself and asked about him, to which the employee replied that someone had dumped him on them, and they would sell him to me for 5 dollars. He had such a unique little face, so I got him out and played with him for a little while. I already had a cage at home, so I just asked the people to hold him for a day so I could buy supplies and set it up. And that's how Karen came to live with us.

The pet store employee told us that Karen was definitely a female. After getting him settled in for a few weeks, we decided to have a "play date" with my friend's bunny who is female. And, well, before we had time to react... :faint:

Long story short (too late?), we had baby bunnies a little while later. We placed them with GOOD families with contracts saying if they ever couldn't keep them they had to come back to us, etc.

Now Karen is living the single bunny life and loving it, I think/hope! His cage is a Critter Nation 161 (single level), but he's free-roaming. His cage just is where his litter box, hay/food, and water bottle are. He also has toys and a bed in there, but mainly he just hangs out on the floor. Now that it's finally getting nice outside, I got him an X-Pen (actually two put together, spoiled bunny!), and he loves to go outside and play. He doesn't really like to be pet or held at all, which I've read is typical for rabbits? But we love him anyway :)

Without further ado, here is Karen the bunny:

And a bonus of a couple of Karen's babies:

Hello and welcome. Love all the pics, sounds like you've had quite a few adventures with Karen already.

Hi & welcome to you, Karen & your mini zoo family!
I second that! Karen is a handsome male bunny & those babies are simply too cute! What kind of parrot do you have if I may ask? My zoo family consists of birds & bunnies! Actually I came to be a bunny person when I was searching & researching for a furry "pet" that would work well with my birds. I've been around the internet & forums/groups & found too many accidents happened with the cat or dog mix with birds. While I try to be very cautious, I know it only takes a second for something to happen. Also, a dog just would not work with my living situation at this time. So far the birds & buns have been a good feathery/furry family mix! The buns don't seem to mind the birds sometimes noisy vocalizations. They were actually raised in a home with an African grey! Anyway nice meeting you & Karen! Look forward to hearing more about Karen & your other animals but especially your parrot! lol Welcome to all!

Thanks, everyone! :)

Tauntz - Ricco (my bird) is a Goffin's Cockatoo :) I got him a year ago as a re-home from kijiji.com. I love him to pieces!!! He's my best friend lol. Are you a member of any bird forums? If so, you might recognize me from there! Oh, yes, I completely understand your concerns about dogs/cats with any prey animals, but mine seem to do very well. Of course they are supervised, we put Karen in his cage if we leave or are sleeping as well as Ricco and the rats! The dogs are absolutely terrified of Ricco (I have a Chihuahua, a Miniature Pinscher, and a Pit Bull/German Shorthaired Pointer mix) and won't dare go near him. In fact, he chases them. They are all very well trained on the "leave-it" command and will immediately stop what they are doing when I give it. I know a lot of people believe that when instinct takes over in a dog nothing can stop it, but many trainers have disproven that. It also really depends on the breed and personality of the individual dog. My Pit mix, for instance, is the most submissive dog I have ever seen and if I raise my voice even slightly, she backs off completely. My Chihuahua is extremely well trained in obedience (I began working with her at 10 weeks) and she minds very well. A few weeks ago, Karen got out of his X-pen (someone read:brother left the door open), and my Chihuahua was outside. Well, the situation was a bit different outside vs inside, and although she had never even attempted to chase Karen inside the house, this was a new ball game, and her prey drive kicked in. I saw it immediately (the body language, I mean) and gave the command, and she just stopped. I got her inside so that I could catch Karen (HAHAHAHA that only took an hour), and that was that! My MinPin, on the other hand, is very stubborn and refuses to learn anything EXCEPT the "leave-it" command... He's an old man, though, and he really doesn't give a d*** about anything lol. Plus he barely has teeth, so I don't think he could do any damage ;)

Oops, you'll learn quite quickly that I am a rambler!

Alternatively, Ricco absolutely LOATHES Karen... Has hated him since the moment I brought him home. Full on wings spread, puffed up, crest up, swaying side to side, hissing his fool head off if I pick Karen up. The first couple of months he would do that any time Karen got within three feet of his cage! He's finally tolerant of Karen now unless, of course, I'm giving him attention... Lol.

He is handsome, and those babies are so cute! We have a "zoo" too...three dogs, two cats, three guinea pigs, a rat, a rabbit, a Betta, and a saltwater tank. The rabbit is a newbie, but all the rest of my animals get along amazingly well (besides the fish anyway). :)
