Hi everyone, just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a recent first time bun-mommy. We don't have a final name for the critter yet, we've been calling it Mr. Bun or Bunny-Bun for now. My avatar is from the first week we had him, I have some more pics for later.
My husband spied a rabbit in our backyard in the peak of summer (100F!) one day. Over the next few weeks we saw him again and again. Always in the shade, but still. Waaaay to hot for a bun. We tossed some veggies out, turns out our neighbors were doing the same thing.
I was debating what to do as I volunteer at the local SPCA, when my husband suggested we try to keep it as a pet first. I was so surprised when he said that! He had a rabbit when he was a kid and really likes them, I never knew.
I tried to catch the rabbit solo one day. Hahaha! NOT happening. Crafty and fast little bugger.
We tag-teamed him in a narrow spot and shoo-ed him into his new cage. He was terrified, so terrified when we first got him. Poor little bun.
His home is in the kitchen and over the past 2 months I've been working with him every day. (Actually, I now think 'he' may be a female). When we first got him we had to remove him from his cage every day for floor time else he'd never come out. He'd hide in the corner under my kitchen table and I'd lay on my stomach and coax him toward me with bits of banana. After about a week he actually ate from my hand and I was so thrilled.
These days I've got him coming up on the couch to sit on my lap for TV time every night. He still isn't thrilled with being petted but he tolerates it. I'm trying to work on being held and petted but he hates that even more and tries to escape. Carrots and pellets are his favorite foods so I use those as motivators.
He has really come a long way with socializing in 2 months but isn't doing any of the typical bun-things I hear about. Definitely no binkies, no sounds at all, and I can't find a single toy he likes. His favorite 'toy' right now is a box filled with paper shreds to dig in.
I am so grateful for websites like House Rabbit Society. I still need to take him/her to the vet and see if he's been fixed already or not. He seems healthy and pretty happy. He 'begs' for snacks when we walk by the cage. Right now he seems most comfortable in the cage and then coming out for playtime, maybe someday he'll be a true house bun.
That got really long! Sorry about that. I'm just happy to find people who can related to bun ownership and maybe give me some tips as we go along.
