I had recently added a female 3 month old Holland lop (Frappe) to my family. She's perfectly healthy but she has severe knotting/matting. I've been able to comb out most of the knots but there's some that are really large ( the largest one spans out about 3-4 inches).
The woman at the store said that she was constantly being licked by the other bunnies so that's what made them a bad as they are.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get them out without hurting her?

Scissors, a slicker brush, a lot of patience.

Why was she with other rabbits in the pet store? Licking does not lead to matting, the pet store individual was feeding you a line of crap. Matts come from neglect, That individual should be ashamed for allowing this animal to get to that condition, AND for making up such a ridiculous lie to appease you. Matts 3 to 4 inches take weeks if not months to develop.

Good luck, and I don't recommend continuing to be a customer at that store.

I'm sorry to sound so harsh. Things like that just really bother me. I do hope you are able to remove the knots and matts.

It is easy to get the skin when using scissors even if you are sure that you just have fur.

Shaving is better but should be done only by someone who is experienced.

gah what an awful woman. if anything licking would get rid of knots and matts!!!

maybe get some of those hair clipper/trimmer things and use that - that way the sharp blade wont touch the skin.

you can get em really cheap in australia and there are few brands of razors (like for your legs or your face) that actually come with a beard trimmer attatchment on them... would be small enough too :)
