[suB][suP]HI everyone, Im new to the group, and want to know a few things about Samantha. She is one of my females that is building her nesting box... or shesputting straw into her box, etc. Anyway, how long do you think that it would take between toniteand in the morning that she would deliver?? Iam so new to this, and not so sure. Is there anything thatI need to do for her???? Weput a corregated box in thier cage (Samantha, and her sister Verona), and cut a hole big enough for both of them. Anyway, we noticed that Samantha has hadstraw in her mouth going in and out of the box.. I did put a piece of batting in there for her, but noton the bottom of the box as Ive read that you are supposed todo that. I guess that we are anxious parents to be, and cant wait to see the babies. What do we do when they are born?? Leave them alone for a few days??? I dontknow.... If anyone has had babies, could you or would you please let me know???[/suP][/suB]

[suB][suP]thanks so much [/suP][/suB]

Are the rabbits in an outside hutch or in a building? Are both of your does

pregnant or just one of them? It is very unusual for two pregnant does to

share a cage and share a nest. They get very territorial of their babies. If

they are together you should consider separating them. Do you know the

exact date that the doe was bred? The nest box should go in 28 days after

the doe was bred. Any earlier and the doe might use it for a litter box.

I use wooden nest boxes with a layer of pine shavings about 2" thick and

then stuff the box with hay. The does will rearrange it to their liking.

Good Luck

Any News this morning? How is the nestbuilding? Did you seperate the does? I hope they don't fight. It could jeopardize the babies safety.

Hi Sue..

I moved your post to the Rabbitry, that's our 'nursery'.

Did you breed this bunny, and if so, when? They usually give birth 31 days after mating.

I'll leave the rest of the info for one of our breeders to answer.

Good luck! :goodluck

Whoops, I wrote that post last night, but it wouldn't go through until now. You've got experienced breeders chiming in.

I'll add that you can check the babies right away, it shouldn't be a problem, especially if mom knows you, just slip her a treat to distract her. You need to make sure they're all alive and well.

If she has any outside the box and they're cold and lifeless, don't give up on them, just try warming them up, they've been known to come around, although sometimes it's takenup to 30 minutes of treatment.

I seem to remember hearing that Mom may not feed them for the first 12 hours, somebody correct me if I'm wrong on that, but youshould check and make sure they are getting enough milk once she starts -- their bellies should look like they've swallowed ping pong balls.

As BG said, I'd be cautious about having the sister around.

Thats all I can think of. :)

I have heard of does sharing a cage and giving birth and stuff - but it isn't usually recommended and I've only heard of it twice. There is a chance she will kill the babies to protect them from the other doe in the cage. You really should think about separating your does if you can.

Does will usually deliver 31 days after being bred....and sometimes two days on either side of that date. So they could deliver on day 29 up to day 33.

I would definitely check the babies after birth to make sure they're all alive - remove any dead ones from the nest. Mama might nurse them right away - she might not. She most likely won't nurse them when you're around and when she does nurse them - she will go in and stand over them - not lay on her side like a dog or cat. She will appear to ignore them because if she was in the wild - she would not want to do anything to draw a predator to them - which means she'd have them someplace safe and then only go to them once or twice a day.

If its only been 2-3 weeks since she has been bred - then she may very well have a "false pregnancy". She'll think she's pregnant and may even pull fur....but you'll never see any babies. If this happens - you'll find at some point she realizes this and destroys the nest or starts to pee and poop in it. This is when I remove the nest - when she stops being protective of it.

There's a whole lot more to share with you - like how to watch for their eyes to open, etc. ~ but let's wait till the babies are born before we deal with all those questions you may come up with.....after you have the babies.

Oh yes - the babies will be blind (their eyes will be closed until later) and they won't have any fur either....
