Ok I plan on breeding my 2 French Angoras near the end of November, so I can have a litter ready to start showing for the spring, and so my rabbit isn't super hot lugging a stomach full of babies around in the summer and so her coat looks nice for showing. Anyways my question is I want to know what colors I may get :) I'm breeding Loretta Lynn (my doe) to Fuzzy Mcgee (my buck). Loretta is Fuzzy Mcgee's aunt lol So here are the pedigrees sorry they look sloppy because I'm reproducing them :p

Fuzzy Mcgee's Pedigree:

Fuzzy Mcgee : REW

1st Generation:

Fuzzie's Predator (his mother) - Broken Black

Fuzzie's Alexi (his father) - REW

2nd Generation:

Fuzzie's Ethan (his grandpa father's side) - Chocolate Steel

Fuzzie's Don't Leer (his grandma father's side) - REW

EA's Brat (His grandpa mother's side) - Broken Black

Fuzzie's Small Fry (his grandma mother's side) - Frosted Pearl

3rd Generation:

Fuzzie's Gaby (his greatgrandpa 1fathers side) - REW

EG's Steela Chance (his greatgrandma 1fathers side) - Chocolate Steel

EA's Brat (his greatgrandpa 2 fathers side) - Broken Black

Fuzzie's Very Prety (his greatgrandma 2 fathers side) - REW

Pam's Mt Morris Pro (his greatgrandpa 1 mothers side) - Black

EA's 2 Sexy (his greatgrandma 1 mothers side) - Broken Blue

Fuzzie's Camerom (his greatgrandpa2 mothers side) - REW

Fuzzie's No Way Britt (his greatgrandma2 mothers side) - Frosted Pearl

That is all of his pedigree, sorry that may have caused confusion :p I will post Loretta's pedigree in the next post :)

I'm getting her on Monday, I only have half of her pedigree as I own her daighter, so I can look at her daighter's pedigree to get most of hers lol

Loretta Lynn's Pedigree:

Loretta Lynn : Lilac

1st Generation:

Fuzzie's Ethan (her dad) - Chocolate Steel

Fuzzie's Don't Leer (her mom) - REW

2nd Generation:

Fuzzie's Gaby (her grandpa fathers side) - REW

Elm Grove Steelachance (her grandma father's side) - Chocolate Steel

EA's Brat (her grandpa mother's side) - Broken Black

Fuzzie's Very Prety (her grandma mother's side) - REW

That is all I have so far, but I will post the 3rd Generation on Monday.

So do I have a good chance of getting Chocolate Steels? Yes? No? What colors will she throw! I know there are some amazingly smart people who can help me out lol

Whatever you get will definitely carry the dilute gene for sure since Loretta Lynn is a lilac.

My head is too fuzzy to think the rest of this through though.

Your doe's genotype (lilac) is:

aabbC_ddE_ - which says to me you won't get steels and I'm not sure you're going to get chocolates without studying dad's pedigree better.

But I'm not the genetics expert that Pam Nock is.

Thank you April!

Peg what exactly happens when the dilute gets in there? I'm not familiar with genetics lol I don't usually research it. I know what colors can be bred to each other and what can't be bred, but when it comes to knowing the meanings of Dilute and that kind of thing I'm seriously stupid :p

Alright, well what color's do you think I'm likely to get? I'm just curious :) I was hoping for steel's lol Because I would like to spin the wool, I think I could make a nice scarf or something with that color wool :D

Just a couple of days ago - I did a post on Basic genetics...for the b & d genes.

The dilute gene is the "d" gene - it is what makes a black rabbit a blue rabbit and a chocolate (brown) rabbit a lilac rabbit.

If the steels are true steels (I find that Angora breeders are notoriously bad at identifying colors and often call rabbits "steels" that aren't really steel - they just have faux ticking), then you have a good chance of steels (including chocolate steel). Also, if those steels in the background are true steels, there's a good chance of Agouti varieties. Self chocolates are also possible. Blacks are also possible. If your REW inherited the broken gene, you could also get brokens. Many othercolors are possible as well.

Since one of your rabbits is a REW and the lilac also carries REW, you have a very good chance of more REWS.

It's hard to venture guesses because we know so little on what genes your REW inherited. We would know more about your REW's true geneotype based on the offpsring she produces.

This is not necessarily true. They will have a possibility of carrying dilute, but will not all definitely carry it.;)

Sorry - but I disagree...

A lilac is aabbC_ddE_

The only thing a lilac can contribute on the "D" gene for dilute is 'd' which is the dilute (recessive).

Therefore - every rabbit that comes from that doe will definitely carry dilute....because that is the only thing the parent can offer on the d gene.

* As a general rule, a rabbit may carry any given gene, but it will not be manifested as a visible coat colour unless in the proper combination.

Thus, a recessive gene like the "d" might be masked/revealed in the offspring, depending on the genotype of the mate.

Peg is correct. The lilac can only pass on d dilute and b chocolate in the B & D series to her offspring, so all the offspring will carry blue (dilute) as well as chocolate.

:O I want an agouti French Angora so bad lol They are gorgeous. I love agouti on French Angoras, I have been trying to find one for sale :) Hopefully when I breed her she throws some :) Or some chocolates and chocolate steels :)

Thanks everyone, very helpful, I will definitly post when I breed her at the end of November and I will post what she has :D
