I just got an e-mail from a friend who knowssomeone who is looking for a home for her fuzzy lop.Apparently the bun is wonderful, but the woman's new step child isallergic, so the bun has to go and soon. She doesn't want totake it to a shelter because she is afraid it won't get a home becauseof the fuzzy fur or that the people won't brush it properly. So my friend thought of me because I just love those lop ears :)

Anyway, I don't know very much about the breed, so I was wondering ifanyone had any good info or sites for fuzzy lops. Any helpwould be great!

Thanks,

Jen

Raspberry's Sebastian is a fuzzy lop, I know she could tell you a lot about the coat care that's required.

She certainly can -- Sebastian is actually a fuzzy Holland Lop with aterrible soft wool coat that matts close to the skin. Raspcan attest to the fact that it's a nightmare to keep up on.

However, a good quality fuzzy lop coat has a lot of guard hairs thatmake the coat easier to care for as it doesn't get matts asbad. Many breeders use a strong blower to blow out the coatand it never needs to be brushed.

So, a lot does depend on the individual's woolas to whether the coat will be easy to care for.

I'm still thinking on if I'm going to takeit. I want to research a little more today and then I'lldecide. I couldn't pick it up till next Sunday because it isa 2 1/2 hr drive and that's my next day off. The bun is a 6mon old male and he isn't fixed yet, but they offered to help pay forit, so that would work out well. My Sage isn't neutered yetbecause I postponed his surgery when I had to pay for Basil's and oneof my ferrets in the same week. He doesn't have any of thosehabits some males get....LOL....I'll probably decide in the next day orso, we'll see....time to research...well, maybe after work.

Jen, as has beenpointed out, I have a fuzzy. Pam explained it perfectly. His coat ismuch more "wooled" than is probably normal. I guess you would just haveto see the bunny to know how difficult the care would be. I can saythat I've heard over and over again that these guys are laid back andhave tremendous personalities. I've also heard that the males are evenmore so that way. Our baby boy is the epitome of all that. I wouldn'ttrade him for anybunny. Even with his bad coat! :XAfterall...when it's necessary, which it often is, you just gotta get thescissors out! ;)

Rasp,

Since his coat is so hard to maintain, you may want to considerinvesting in a blower and blowing the coat daily to help keep it frommatting. His little girl would really enjoy that task -- itcan be rather fun :)

Most rabbit supply online catalogs carry the rabbit blowers.

Yep, he got fixed at whatever the timethey tell you to do it is. When is that? 5-6 months? I can't remember.I'd have to go look at the calendar or look for a receipt. He hadn'treally gotten nasty yet, but he had just startedpeeing onthings a bit more andwas a bit moremoody.

I'll post it here for the benefit of others . . .

Da Mars http://www.damars.8m.com/carries the popular Air Force blower.

You can go to their site, and do a search for "blower", which will take you to their grooming equipment page.
