Hi, I believe my rabbit has fur mites. As of right now, the vet is extremely busy and it will be a while before they can take us in. I just want to know if anyone has used DE on their rabbit since I’ve seen a couple of people do that before. My rabbit lives alone so I believe it came from hay, and he is flaking with hair loss.

Most of the people I’ve seen using DE has large colonies of rabbits, and it seems to go away in a couple of weeks.

I will post a picture of DE if anyone is confused on what it is!

So, now I know DE is not safe for the rabbits, even if it is food safe, so I did find a couple of topical treatments that was recommended on the site. I’m not sure which one is the best, so please help me choose!

If you have any that you recommendations, I would be extremely grateful!

Yes, DE may not be safe, at least I heard a vet say it can damage the gut and respiratory tracts.

Regular Advantage is just for fleas. Selamectin, so Revolt or regular Revolution (not the plus) are both good rabbit safe treatments for mites. Rabbits have to get double or triple the cat/dog dose (so 12-18mg/kg instead of 6mg/kg) when treating mites (fleas is 18mg/kg).

Ivermectin is another rabbit safe treatment for mites, though you have to either get it dosed from your vet or know how to correctly calculate and administer doses yourself when it's not available in the topical spot on form (like here in the US), so as to not risk a fatal OD. It also may have a higher risk of side effects for certain rabbits (dutch ancestry, BEW, vienna carriers).

Medirabbit: safe antiparasitics

Medirabbit: fur mites

(Don't pay attention to the 6mg/kg dose recommendations)

If it's not a severe infestation, you may be able to wait to see the vet. Or phone up and ask if you can come just pick up some Revolution/Revolt (selamectin) to treat it.

Thank you so much for all of your help truly. I’m not sure if this helps, but my rabbit is a 5 year old Jersey Wooly, and the infestation is not that severe right now (mostly his lower back, next to his tail). I’ll ask the vet if I can, but I plan on using Revolt or Regular Revolution. Again, thank you so much!
