Some breeds, especially the larger rabbits, develop more slowly and need to be free-fed longer. You can start cutting back pellets after six months for a dwarf, but best to free feed for a full year with a Flemish.

The main reasons for restricting food once they're mature is that too many pellets can cut down their hay consumption, and they can gain too much weight (bunnies shouldn't be tubby, they're prone to fatty liver disease) so that part you can play by ear.

Hay isn't at all fattening, and veggies aren't very. :)

Hope this helps!

Also, if you can get some, a hand ful of alfalfa every 2 days or so is good for calcium up until 6-7 months then grass hay is best and a little bit of alfalfa every week or so is a nice treat.

Since I have Englishes and will be breeding them I will probably stop free-feeding the ones I keep at 7/8 months old unless they get breed then. Right now my EL, Minnie, is 5 months old and she gets 2 1/3 cup of feed twice a day, while others get 1/3 cup twice a day or just one.

I stop free-feeding Mini Rex at 6 months old.
