Hi folks. Another thread around here and some cages from Ikea Hacks page keeps a thought swirling in the back of my head about someday making a cage that can fit in the living room as part of the decor. Now I'm pretty sure I can pull it off but what seems to always bother me is depth. Furniture doesn't usually go past a depth of 24in. At minimum I feel a Flemish needs a 3ft by 4ft cage. Would it be possible to instead do a 2ft by 5ft or 6ft? Now this is just a place for a single rabbit to dwell when they rest, they'll still have a whole apartment to wander and possibly a 2nd floor (if I can figure that part out).

Yeah, I used an old oven cabinet, so the depth is 24." It's just over 4' long. Granted I don't have a Flemish, but I do have 2 rabbits. My cage does seem small (to me), but like you plan to do, mine are out all day long.

I think that with yours out so much that a 2x5 or 6 would be just fine.

If they are not shut in then it doesn't need to be as big, it can be a cosy place to rest. Obviously it needs to be big enough for them to move about and stretch out but it's more like having a sleeping box inside a cage (where the cage equals your whole apartment!).

I think that is a fine size for a flemish (Note: never seen one in person). I am in the process of building a new cage for my 2 rabbits. I am going for more vertical space though. My new cage is a 4x2x4 panel NIC cage. It is really 2 cages stacked on top of eachother. Good luck with the cage. I would love to see pictures of it in various stages and once it is compleated.

I think a 2'x5-6' would be fine, since it's just a "home base" to snuggle up in and a place for litter box/food/water when they're not hopping around your apartment.
